THE CONVERSION OF PAUL/SAUL

THE ROAD TO DAMASCUS

CHARACTERS:
• Saul (a fervent persecutor of Christians)
• Voice of Jesus (spoken by an offstage narrator)
• Ananias (a Christian who receives a vision about Saul)

SETTING: A dusty road leading to Damascus . The stage is dimly lit, with a
bright light that represents the divine encounter.

INTRODUCTION: Good afternoon, everyone. Today, we’ll delve into one of

the most transformative events in Christian history—the conversion of Saul,
who would become known as Paul the Apostle.ot

[Scene 1: The Road to Damascus]

(Saul, dressed in period-inappropriate attire, walks vigorously down
the stage. He is holding a scroll, visibly angry and determined. The
stage is dim, with only a faint light illuminating Saul.)

Saul: (muttering to himself) These Christians…they are spreading lies. I

will bring them to justice. Damascus will be the end of their blasphemy.

[Suddenly, a blinding light shines down from above. Saul shields his
eyes and stumble, falling to the ground.]

Voice of Jesus: (from offstage, echoing) Sau, Saul, why do you persecute
me?

Saul: (terrified, looking around) Who are you, Lord?

Voice of Jesus: I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you
to kick against the goads.

Saul: (shaking, fearful) What should I do, Lord?

Voice of Jesus: (calmly) Get up and go into the city. You will be told what
you must do.
[The light fades. Saul slowly gets up, now blinded. He is led offstage
by an other character]

[Scene 2: Anania’s Home]

[Ananias, a devout Christian, is in his home, praying quietly. A soft
light highlights his face.]

Voice of Jesus: (again from offstage) Ananias!

Ananias: (startled) Yes, Lord?

Voice of Jesus: Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a
man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying, and in a vision, he has seen a
man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.

Ananias: (concerned) Lord, I have heard many reports about this man and
all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. And he has
come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your
name.

Voice of Jesus: (firmly) Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim

my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. I will
show him how much he must suffer for my name.

[Ananias reluctantly nods and exits the stage, determined but

anxious.]

[Scene 3: The Encounter]

[Saul is sitting in darkness on stage, looking lost and disoriented.
Ananias enters, carrying a gentle light. He approaches Saul with
compassion.]

Ananias: (gently) Brother Saul, the Lord–Jesus, who appeared to you on

the road as you were coming here–has sent me so that you may see again
and be filled with the Holy Spirit.
[Ananias lays his hands on Saul. Saul’s sight is restored, and he
stands astonished.]

Saul: (overwhelmed) The Lord is truly among us. I see!

Ananias: (smiling) You are now a new creation in Christ. Go forth and
proclaim the Gospel with the same fervor you once used to persecute.

[Saul nods, deeply moved and grateful)

Saul: (earnestly) I will. The message of Christ will be my life’s mission.

[Ananias exits, leaving Saul to reflect on his new purpose. The stage
lights gradually brighten, symbolizing Saul’s transformation.]
