HOW AutoCAD WORKS

⚙️ There is a co-ordinate system used in AutoCAD.

⚙️ Every drawing shows its co-ordinate.
⚙️ In above next slide the line shows its co-ordinate
that is ( 9 ) and (-10,-4).
⚙️ There is so many commands like copy, move ,rotate
,mirror path array rectangular array, polar array &
more.
⚙️ Different types of drawing can be made in the same
time by usi command that is LAYER.
⚙️ Using line , arc , circle , rectangle ellipse & polygon ,
drawing of different type can be made.
CO-Ordinate System

🔶 Every thing that we draw in AutoCAD is exact.

🔶 All object drawn on screen is based on simple co-
ordinate system.
🔶 In AutoCAD it is known as world co-ordinate system
(WCS).
🔶 We are drawing a line, so we have two points and
As shown in figure.
The UCS and WCS

🔅 The AutoCAD world is 3 dimensional. However, if we

want to draw 1d object, such as a plan or a section, we
will use only imensions (x and y).

🔅 WCS (world coordinate system) is the imaginary plane

that is parallel c t_he ground. It is the default coordinate
system.

🔅 Modifications made to the World Coordinate System

(WCS) result in a U Coordinate System (UCS). It is the
plane that you work on. It enables th to draw 3
dimensional objects,

🔅 To create a new UCS, type ucs on the command window,

then say New'a d specify 3 points on your new UCS
plane.

► Solids contain the "mass properties" of 3D objects

►You can use the Solids toolbar for readily accessible

objects

►Box. ►Torus

►Cylinder ►Cone

►Wedge. ►Sphere

►You can use the Boolean operations of more complicated

shapes.

►Union (join two solids)

►Subtract (carve out the second solid from the first)
►Intersection (only the common area)

Use of Extrude Command

If you "Extrude" a surface into the third dimension, you simply add a thickness
in section. This basically is same as creating a "solid" object.

• 3D allows you to create 3D drawings that are true

representations
of an actual model. These drawings can be viewed from any angle
just like a physical model.
• That is why 3D CADD drawings are called 3D models.
The major distinction between a 2D drawing and a 3D model is
that a 2D drawing is defined only with two coordinates (X andY).
A 3D model is defined with three coordinates (X,Yand Z).The
Z-coordinate determines the height of an object. To make a 3D
model,
you need to consider all the objects of the model in 3D space and
enter the X,Y and Z coordinates for all drawing objects.

INTRODUCTION

AutoCAD is a software package primarily used for 2D drafting that was developed
in the 1980s as a design solution for architects and engineers. It has since
become popular across a variety of industries, including construction and interior
design. The software enables the creation of detailed drawings of buildings,
objects, landscapes, circuits, house plans, and layouts, eliminating the need for
hand-drawn designs.
HISTORY OF AUTO CAD

1. In 1979, AutoCAD was first released under the name of Interact CAD by
Autodesk’s co-founder Michael Riddle, which was one of the first commercial
software to digitize drawings. Three years later, Interact CAD was sold to
Autodesk founder John Walker, who relaunched it in 1982 under the name
AutoCAD.
2. Thanks to Autodesk’s decision to expand its programming environments and
operating systems, AutoCAD became the leading CAD program for 2D
designs in various industries, including architecture, civil engineering, and
manufacturing.
COORDINATES SYSTEM
World Coordinate System (WCS), User Coordinate
System (UCS).
There is 4 AutoCAD coordinates system you should
know. Absolute coordinate system, Relative
Rectangular coordinate system, Relative Polar
coordinate system and Interactive system(Direct
coordinate system).
Absolute Coordinate system:
Absolute Coordinates uses the Cartesian System to
specify a position in the X, Y, and (if needed) Z axes
to locate a point from the 0-X, 0-Y, and 0-Z (0,0,0)
point. To locate a point using the Absolute
Coordinate system, type the X-value, Y-value, and, if
needed, the Z-value separated by commas (with no
spaces).
2D DESIGN
1. Two-dimensional drawings display the
length and height of objects on a flat
surface without depth. Understanding 2D
drawing often requires a basic technical
understanding to interpret dimensions,
spaces, and scales.
2. 2D drawings are used for floor plans,
sections, electrical and piping circuits, and
are measured in square units (such as
cm2 or inch2). They use geometric
elements like points, lines, circles, and
arcs.
2D DESIGN COMMANDS
1. SCALE
2. ARRAY
3. EXTEND
4. JOIN
5. CHAMFER
6. FILLET
7. COPY
8. MIRROR
9. CUT
10. RECTANGLE
11. CIRCLE
3D DESIGN
1. Three-dimensional drawings simulate real-
life objects by portraying them in terms of
their height, width, and depth. This allows
beginners to create drawings intuitively, as
this is how humans perceive objects in
real life.
2. 3D modeling can be used to create solids,
surfaces, and mesh objects, and can
facilitate users in simulating real-life
objects, building prototypes, carrying out
stress analysis on structures, and
simulating assemblies and motion in a
three-dimensional space.
UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS OF AUTO CAD
FILE TYPES

AutoCAD uses its own file type, DWG, which

contains all the drawings’ information. Users
can also export file types such as DXF to Adobe
PDF, Adobe Illustrator, or CorelDRAW
BASIC COMMANDS
Commands are essential for the functioning of the software’s interface. They are groups of words,
similar to shortcuts, that perform specific instructions and operations needed to create drawings.
These commands are automated and visible in a toolbar at the bottom of the screen. This allows
users to track the commands in use. At the same time, the program suggests all similar
commands while users start typing the command name, so they don’t need to remember the exact
spelling of a command to start using it.

SCALE. - Manages and controls a set of scaling options in a given object of the drawing.

MOVE. - Moves objects in a specified distance and direction.

EXPLODE - Breaks a compounded object into its constituent parts.

BASIC COMMANDS

JOIN. - Joins similar objects to form a single one.

DIM - Creates annotations of diverse dimension types (lines, arcs, angles, etc.).

AREA. - Calculates the area and perimeter of a given object.

OOPS. - Restores the last elements deleted. It serves as an UNDO option.

EXTEND. - Extends an object until it meets the edges of another one.TR

Trims an object.

ERASE. - Erases elements in the drawing with a simple click.

HATCHING

1. Hatching is used to add shaded patterns

to objects and shapes within an autocad
drawing. Hatching patterns can be used to
indicatea material to be used, such as
aconcrete hatching
2. You will pick-

1.Pattern

2.Scale

3.Angle

4.Points
ADVANTAGES OF AUTO CAD

increase productivity, and reduce project completion time.
● AutoCAD users can produce extremely accurate and precise drawings that
can be measured to the very last millimetre.
● Even after designs have been developed, AutoCAD makes it easier to update
and modify them by altering the measurements in AutoCAD.
● The platform lets you edit ongoing projects without having to redraw designs
as you’re likely to go through multiple changes and drafting
● AutoCAD makes it easy to draw objects accurately
LIMITATIONS OF AUTO CAD

● Complexity.
● High cost.
● Steep learning curve.
● Potential software compatibility issues.
● Limited file format support.
● Lack of cloud-based collaboration.
● Limited mobile support.
● Potential software bugs
● Conclusion
APPLICATIONS OF AUTO CAD

● Architectural drawing of all kinds

⚫ Type 7 and hit enter
Lets draw a LINE (3):
b
(5,22,13)
a
(4,8,11)

If we know the coordinates of the line we

want to draw, we can simply type them
into the command line. (However, this
mostly is not the case.)
1. Give the command
2. Specify the first point (4,8,11)
3. Specify the second point (5,11,23)
What else? a
⚫ Rectangle: two diagonal lines
(pick first point, select the second one b
with relation to the first. @5<-33)

d
⚫ Circle/Arc: center and radius a

⚫ Polygon: specify the number of

edges and length of a side

Hatching
⚫ Hatching is used to add shaded patterns to objects and
shapes within an Autocad drawing. Hatch patterns can
be used to indicate a material to be used, such as a
concrete hatch. Alternatively it could be used to make
an area of a drawing stand out.

⚫ You will pick:

⚫ Pattern
⚫ Scale
⚫ Angle
⚫ points
Drawing SOLIDS (3D)
⚫ Solids contain the “mass properties” of 3D
objects.
⚫ You can use the Solids toolbar for readily
accessible objects
⚫ Box ■ Torus
⚫ Cylinder ■ Cone
⚫ Wedge ■ Sphere
⚫ You can use the Boolean operations of more
complicated shapes.
⚫ Union (join two solids)
⚫ Subtract (carve out the second solid from the first)
⚫ Intersection (only the common area)
We can create solids by extruding as well
⚫ If you “extrude” a surface into the third
dimension, you simply add a thickness in
section. This basically is same as creating a
“solid” object
Extrude 5
units 5 units

Extrude -4

UCS and WCS
⚫ The AutoCAD world is 3 dimensional. However, if we
want to draw a 2d object, such as a plan or a section, we
will use only 2 dimensions (x and y).
⚫ WCS (world coordinate system) is the imaginary plane
that is parallel to the ground. It is the default coordinate
system.
⚫ Modifications made to the World Coordinate System
(WCS) result in a User Coordinate System (UCS). It is the
plane that you work on. It enables the user to draw 3
dimensional objects.
⚫ To create a new UCS, type ucs on the command window,
then say New and specify 3 points on your new UCS
plane.
AutoCAD Advantage
⚫ Removal of Data Translations
⚫ SolidWorks / Solid Edge / Inventor Compatibility
⚫ Industry Standard Translators
⚫ Reduced Training Time/Cost
⚫ Rapid Product Advancements

Disadvantages of AutoCAD
⚫ Line
⚫ Limited File Formats
⚫ Color, Fill and Texture
⚫ Non-Parametric

 AutoCAD, which stands for Computer-Aided Design, is a popular software
application used for 2D and 3D drafting and design. Developed and sold by
Autodesk, AutoCAD has become a standard tool in various industries,
including architecture, engineering, construction, and manufacturing.
 AutoCAD is primarily used for creating precise drawings and models. It
allows professionals to design and draft detailed plans for buildings,
mechanical components, electrical circuits, and more. The software
provides a digital platform for creating accurate representations of physical
objects or structures.
 AutoCAD was first developed by John Walker and his team at Autodesk,
which he co-founded with 12 others.

 The software was initially released in 1982. It was one of the first CAD
programs available for personal computers, making computer-aided design
more accessible to a broader audience.

 The First version by the autodesk company was demonstrated at the 1982
A. ABSOLUTE COORDINATE SYSTEM

 Here, Every point starts from origin.

 In AUTOCAD, the absolute coordinates are
specified by entering x and y coordinates,
separated by a comma.
For ex: A point with X=4 and Y=3

B. RELATIVE COORDINATE SYSTEM

 First point, no need to start from origin.

 In this, every point is calculated from the
previous point.
C. RELATIVE POLAR COORDINATE SYSTEM.

 In this, a point can be located by defining both the

distance of the point from the current point and the angle
that the line between the two points makes with the
positive X-Axis.
 The prompt sequence to draw a line from a point at 1,1 to
a distance of 5 units from the point (1,1) and at an angle
of 30 degrees to the axis.
• AutoCAD provides a user-friendly interface for drawing and design tasks.
• Users create 2D and 3D drawings using commands like lines, circles, and
polygons.
• AutoCAD uses WCS and UCS to define object positions within the
drawing space.
• Objects can be edited and modified precisely using commands like move,
copy, and rotate.
• AutoCAD allows users to add dimensions and annotations for design
details.
• Supports the creation and manipulation of three-dimensional objects and
structures.
• Multiple users can work on the same drawing simultaneously, aided by
collaboration tools.
• Drawings are saved in the DWG format, with support for importing and
exporting various file formats.
The "Draw" toolbar is designed to provide users with quick access to fundamental
drawing commands, such as creating lines, circles, rectangles, arcs, polygons,
ellipses, splines, inserting blocks, adding hatches, and incorporating text. Each
command within this toolbar serves a unique purpose, contributing to the creation
of diverse and intricate designs.

On the other hand, the "Modify" toolbar focuses on editing and refining existing
elements within the drawing. Commands such as erase, copy, move, rotate,
scale, mirror, trim, extend, offset, and array empower users to manipulate and
fine-tune the design elements. Whether it's duplicating objects, adjusting their
positions, or refining shapes and boundaries, the "Modify" toolbar facilitates
precise control over the drawing's composition.
o Type D on the command line and press enter. Click on the New button then
select a name for your dimension style and click on the Continue button
 3D modeling in AutoCAD involves using commands and tools to create solid,
surface, or mesh objects that represent the shape and appearance of real or imaginary
objects.
 3D modeling in AutoCAD involves creating three-dimensional representations of
objects or spaces, adding depth and dimension to your designs.
 The software employs a Cartesian coordinate
system, with X, Y, and Z axes governing spatial
orientation. Users work within viewports to
manipulate and visualize models from diverse
angles. Fundamental 3D modeling commands,
such as Extrude for adding thickness, and
Revolve for creating symmetrical shapes, form
the building blocks of this process. The User
Coordinate System (UCS) allows for custom
coordinate orientations. Editing tools like Move,
Copy, and Mirror are adapted for 3D, while
commands like Slice and Boolean Operations
enhance the manipulation of 3D objects.
 WHAT IS 3D MODELLING ?

1. In three dimensional drawings you work

with the Z-Axis, in addition to the X and
Y Axes.
2. Plain views sections and elevations
represent only two dimensions.
3. Isometric, perspective drawings, on the
other hand, represent all three
dimensions.
4. By default, AUTOCAD stores the Z
value as your current elevation with
thickness of zero.
 Extrude : This command allows you to extrude 2D objects into the third
dimension, adding thickness and creating 3D solids.

 Revolve : With Revolve, you can create 3D objects by revolving 2D entities

around an axis. This is particularly useful for generating cylindrical or
symmetrical shapes.
 AutoCAD helps draw things exactly and accurately.
 It makes drawing and designing faster compared to doing it by
hand.
 Used in many industries like architecture, engineering, and
construction.
 Can create 3D models of objects and spaces.
 Multiple people can work on the same project together.
 You can change AutoCAD to fit your needs.
 Helps make detailed drawings and plans.
 Can do reptitive tasks automatically.
