After working four rounds in granny stitch pattern using a 4.5mm hook, my squares measured
10cm.
Construction
This is a square shaped cushion with a finished size of 40cm square. It is worked in two pieces.
The back of the cushion is made first by crocheting 16 small granny squares which are then
joined together using double crochet. The front of the cushion is crocheted in one piece,
changing the yarn colour at the start of each round. The back and front pieces are then joined
together with two rounds of double crochet to create an edging.
Instructions for this crochet cushion are provided in written format only.
Abbreviations
ch - chain
dc - double crochet

Round 2: 4ch, (into corner space: 3tr, 3ch, 3tr, 1 ch) x3,

You have now completed your 1st granny square. You need to make another 15 squares in
the colours shown below:
• Using Colour 1, make another five granny squares (you will have 6 in total).
• Using Colour 2, make five granny squares.
• Using Colour 3, make five granny squares.

You will now have 16 granny squares for the back of your cushion.
Lay your crochet squares on a flat surface. Using a tension square or an inch tape, measure
across these crocheted squares. Check your measurement on a few different places and for
all squares to make sure that the size is the same.
To find out final cushion size multiply by four, so final cushion size is ____ cm square.
Join another two squares onto this row using the same joining method. Then, join your other
three rows in the same way.
After all four rows have been joined, start double crocheting all the rows together to make a
large square cushion back.
Double crochet all around the outside of your cushion back placing 63 dc along each side and
3 dc in each corner. (To achieve my 63 dc along each side, I crocheted 15 dc along each square
and then dc2tog over each join).
Using 4 stitch markers, mark centre corner stitch on the four corners of the back of your
cushion.

You have now completed six rounds of the front of your Granny Square Cushion.
Continuing in pattern as set, crochet another ten rounds changing the yarn colour on every
round. You will crochet 16 rounds in total for your cushion front and your final round will be
worked using Colour 1.
Using Colour 1, double crochet all around the outside of your cushion front placing 63 dc
along each side and 3 dc in each corner.
Using 4 stitch markers, mark centre corner stitch on the four corners of the front of your
cushion.

Finishing
I blocked both of my finished crocheted pieces before joining them together. I pinned both
back and front pieces to 40cm square on a blocking board, held an iron over them and applied
steam - be very careful not to touch the crocheted pieces with the iron if using this blocking
method.
I crocheted my cushion pieces together as I find this provides a very neat join, but if you prefer
to, you can sew your pieces together.
Place both cushion pieces together, with right sides facing out. Make sure to match up your
corners and leave a 45-stitch opening along the bottom (so that you can get your cushion pad
inside your finished cushion cover). Mark this 45-stitch opening with a couple of stitch
markers or some scrap yarn.
With the front piece of your cushion facing and starting at the marker indicating end of
opening, join both pieces together with dc around all four sides through front loops only,
ending at the marker indicating start of opening. You will work 3dc into each corner as before.
Then, dc into both loops of front piece along the 45-stitch opening (the back piece will not be
joined to the front along the opening).
Slip stitch to start of round, work bdc along front opening and then around all other sides of
cushion. Crochet only 1 bdc into each corner stitch. Slip stitch to start of round and fasten
off. Sew in any loose ends.
Rejoin yarn to stitches along the back of opening and dc all along this edge. Then work bdc
back to start of the back opening. Slip stitch to start and fasten off. Sew in any loose ends.
Finally, sew three buttons onto the back of your cushion, using gaps in the front piece as
button holes, and place a 40cm square cushion pad inside.
