1. Butterfly wing clap explains mystery of flight

The fluttery flight of butterflies has so far been somewhat of a mystery to researchers. Now
researchers at Lund University in Sweden have studied the aerodynamics of butterflies in a wind tunnel.
The results suggest that butterflies use a highly effective clap technique, therefore making use of their
unique wings. This helps them rapidly take off when escaping predators.
The study explains the benefits of both the wing shape and the flexibility of their wings. The
Lund researchers studied the wing beats of freely flying butterflies during take-off in a wind tunnel.
During the upward stroke, the wings cup, creating an air-filled pocket between them. When the wings
then collide, the air is forced out, resulting in a backward jet that propels the butterflies forward. The
downward wing beat has another function: the butterflies stay in the air and do not fall to the ground.
The wings colliding was described by researchers almost 50 years ago, but it is only in this study
that the theory has been tested on real butterflies in free flight. Until now, the common perception has
been that butterfly wings are aerodynamically inefficient, however, the researchers suggest that the
opposite is actually true.
"That the wings are cupped when butterflies clap them together, makes the wing stroke much more
effective. It is an elegant mechanism that is far more advanced than we imagined, and it is fascinating.
The butterflies benefit from the technique when they have to take off quickly to escape from predators,"
says biology researcher Per Henningsson, who studied the butterflies' aerodynamics together with
colleague Christoffer Johansson.
"The shape and flexibility of butterfly wings could inspire improved performance and flight technology
in small drones," he continues.

2. Recycling is a process where waste or used products are reproduced into new products. A
product which has served its purpose will be discarded, and recycling is an effort to extend its usage life.
This process has a lot of benefits to humanity and mother earth.
First, recycling a material can help preserve the environment. For example, recycling the paper
can result in paper production without additional trees falling. By recycling more paper and selling it to
the consumer, more papers can be used without further damaging the forest.
Second, recycling a material takes less energy than producing an item from raw materials. For
example, an aluminum product uses both aluminum and a huge amount of energy to produce it from raw
ore. Thus, by recycling an item made of aluminum, we can reuse the metal again and also save on the
huge energy during the production process.
Waste that is not recycled usually ends up in the landfill. It is here that the waste is left to rot or
decomposed, and this may take many years or even generations to fully decompose. More and more
waste is being sent to the landfills, and if recycling does not take place, the landfill may be right behind
our homes in the future.
Besides, recycled products usually cost less. Using existing material and a lot less energy,
recycled product can be sold for a fraction of the same item created using raw materials. Apart from that,
selling waste for recycling purposes converts garbage into useful cash.
In short, recycling becomes increasingly important in a world where the population is booming.
More and more waste is being produced every single day. If these products are not recycled at the end
of the product life, it will take generations to break down or decompose.
