INTRODUCTION

The Philippines, a tropical country in southeast

Asia is home to many coconut plantations
because of its ideal environment.

The use of coconut shells as the main ingredient

in briquette production demonstrates that this
material has greater heating benefits and can
be used as a solid fuel substitute [1].

PROBLEM # 1
COCONUT WASTE UNDERUTILIZATION

According to Philippine Statistics Authority, The

coconut (with husk) production from April to June
2023 reached 3.41 million metric tons, indicating an
annual growth of 1.5 percent from the 3.36 million
metric tons recorded level in the same quarter of
2022. [2]

Coconut tress are abundant in tropical countries like

the Philippines. About 3.506 million ha. of coconut
area were covered in the Philippines. [3]

PROPOSED SOLUTION
Utilization of coconut shell as another form of
fuel

Utilizing bio-briquettes from coconut shell-

charcoal presents a viable way to address these
issues [4].

When compared to other biomass products used to

make briquettes, the determined calorific content
of coconut shells is 18.60 Megajoules/kilogram
(MJ/kg). Furthermore, the moisture and ash
contents of coconut shells are lower before
briquetting, at 10% and 26%, respectively [5].

PROBLEM # 2
BRIQUETTING INTEGRATION AND IMPLEMENTATION

Modern briquetting equipment can be costly, which

may discourage investment, particularly in countries
with limited funding. [8]

A significant disadvantage of most briquetting

machines is their low capacity in addition to their
frequent difficulty in operation. Similarly, little visibility
for charcoal briquettes has resulted in low popularity in
the local market [10].

6
PROPOSED SOLUTION
Design and fabricate lowcost Briquetting
Machine efficient enough to produce quality
biomass briquettes.

Auger screw was designed and developed to

reduce briquette production costs [6].

Screw press technology is able to produce high

combusting quality due to the auger screw
compression capability [7]

To ensure the efficient production of briquettes

from a variety of biomass materials, crushers in
briquette machines play an important role.
Crushers are applied to decrease the size of raw
materials to a powder form so that the particle size
can become uniform [9].

STATEMENT OF THE
PROBLEM

Coconut shells, abundant in Carcar, Cebu, are often wasted but

could be converted into sustainable energy. Due to their low
density and high moisture content, they are challenging to use
directly for energy. However, converting them into bio-
briquettes addresses these issues, making them easier to
handle, store, and transport while increasing their calorific
value. Developing an efficient briquetting machine is key to
optimizing this process, enhancing sustainable energy
production.

8
OBJECTIVES
This study aims seeks the following objectives:

1. Develop and innovate a briquetting machine

that can produce low-volatile and high calorific
value briquettes, optimizing the energy
produced per unit briquette.
2. Investigate machine efficiency by analyzing
output rate per unit of time and how effectively
the machine transforms raw materials into a
dense, and maximize calorific value of briquette
product.
3. Analyze briquette quality based on physical
properties and density to ensure that
briquettes meet specific requirements for
intended use.
