Part 1. You will listen to a lecture on the differences and the similarity between islands and peninsulas.
Complete the information in the following summary while listening. Now, you have 30 seconds to have a
look at the summary.
Islands and peninsulas have differences and a similarity. The first difference is related to the transport.

Because islands are surrounded by water, they can only be reached by (1) _________________________.

However, peninsulas have access to land, so they can be reached by (2a) ___________________________

and also (2b) ________________________. The second difference is in numbers. Islands can be found in

(3) _____________________________, so they can be very crowded. On the other hand, peninsulas are
always on (4) ________________________________. Islands and peninsulas also differ in their sizes. For

islands, size (5) ______________________________. Some islands are very big, and some are very small.

However, a peninsula has to be (6)______________________________ to be called a “peninsula”. There is

also a similarity between islands and peninsulas. Both have access to water on at least (7)______________.

Because they have access to seas and oceans, they can be visited by (8) ____________________________.

Islands and peninsulas differ in the transportation that is necessary to reach them, their numbers and their

size; however, they are similar because both have access to water.

Part 2. Study the sentences from the recording. Work in pairs and read aloud the sentences to each other.

Hello everyone.

Last week, we looked at the differences between two bodies of water, you know, oceans and seas; and
today, we will look at two types of land that have coasts to these waters: islands and peninsulas.

I will first define them for you; and then, talk about the differences and a similarity between the two.
The term “Island” refers to any piece of land that is surrounded by water on all four sides.

That is, an island has coasts to the sea or ocean around four sides. OK?

Alright, on the other hand, the term “Peninsula” refers to a piece of land that is surrounded by water on
the three sides but connected to the mainland continent on one side.

Peninsulas have access to the water on three sides; and the remaining one side is attached to the
mainland.

So an island has water around 4 sides, but the peninsula has water around 3.
