GENERAL
1 CALIBRATION DESCRIPTION:
Table 1.
Accuracy: *
* See applicable T.O. 33K-1-100-2 or Calibration Measurement Summary (CMS) using the AFCAV Viewer.
2 EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS:
2.1 GAGE BLOCKS Range: 0.05 to 4.0 in L.S. Starrett Co. L.S. Starrett Co.
36 81
Accuracy: 12 in from
stated value
* Required accuracy of Surface Plate (2.2) for TIs with an accuracy more accurate than 0.0005 inch. The
minimum combined TAR of this Surface Plate accuracy with Gage Blocks (2.1) and (2.3) is 2.3:1 for accuracy
of 0.0002 inch.

3 PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS:
3.1 Review and become familiar with the entire procedure before beginning the Calibration Process.
3.2 For unanswered questions concerning the operating instructions of the TI, consult the operator manual for the
TI.
3.3 Use only portions of the procedure applicable to the TI being calibrated.
3.4 Inspect the TI for surface defects. Surface defects that cannot be removed or repaired that impair the usefulness
of the TI may be reason for rejection.
3.5 For TIs which have multiple functions and a single scale: Scale linearity need only be checked on one function.
A single point accuracy must be checked for any remaining functions.
3.5.1 For TIs with an accuracy of 0.0005 inches or less: Consult the Surface Plate Numeric Flatness plot and
select an area where the Flatness does not exceed 60 µin over an area where the TI and Gage Blocks will be used.
Using the Repeat Reading Gage, measure and verify that the selected area has no deviations from uniformity greater
than 60 µin.
3.5.2 For TIs with an accuracy larger than 0.0005 inches: Consult the Surface Plate Numeric Flatness plot and
select an area where the Flatness does not exceed 200 µin over an area where the TI and Gage Blocks will be used.
3.6 Select, clean and if necessary, wring Gage Blocks that nominally equal 25, 50, 75 and 95% of TI Full Scale
(FS). TIs with metric scales can be calibrated using metric or inch series Gage Blocks. When using inch series
Gage Blocks to calibrate metric scales, convert the Gage Block size to the equivalent metric size.
NOTE
For Mechanical TIs: If the TI gaging contact cannot reach the shortest
preselected Gage Block from step 3.6, reselect a Gage Block that is within
0.25 inches of the TIs minimum contact range.
NOTE
For Electronic and Dial Indicator TIs: If the TI gaging contact cannot reach the
Surface Plate when setting zero, select an additional Gage Block that is
within 0.25 inches of the TIs minimum contact range. This Gage Block will be
referred to as the Zeroing Gage Block. The Zeroing Gage Block will be gaged
upon and used to set TI display to read zero (0).
3.7 Place all Gage Blocks and TI on the preselected area of the Surface Plate to stabilize.
TIs with accuracy larger than 50 µin up to and including 0.0001 inches:
Gage Block lengths up to and including 6 inches: Stabilization Time = 5 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 6 inches up to and including 12 inches: Stabilization Time = 15 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 12 inches up to and including 18 inches: Stabilization Time = 45 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 18 inches up to and including 24 inches: Stabilization Time = 75 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 24 inches up to and including 36 inches: Stabilization Time = 105 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 36 inches up to and including 48 inches: Stabilization Time = 135 min

TIs with accuracy larger than 0.0001 inches up to and including 0.0002 inches:
Gage Block lengths up to and including 6 inches: Stabilization Time = 5 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 6 inches up to and including 12 inches: Stabilization Time = 15 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 12 inches up to and including 18 inches: Stabilization Time = 30 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 18 inches up to and including 24 inches: Stabilization Time = 45 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 24 inches up to and including 36 inches: Stabilization Time = 60 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 36 inches up to and including 48 inches: Stabilization Time = 75 min
TIs with accuracy larger than 0.0002 inches up to and including 0.0003 inches:
Gage Block lengths up to and including 12 inches: Stabilization Time = 5 min
Gage Blocks lengths larger than 12 inches up to and including 24 inches: Stabilization Time = 30 min
Gage Blocks lengths larger than 24 inches up to and including 48 inches: Stabilization Time = 40 min
TIs with accuracy larger than 0.0003 inches up to and including 0.0004 inches:
Gage Block lengths up to and including 12 inches: Stabilization Time = 5 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 12 inches up to and including 24 inches: Stabilization Time = 20 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 24 inches up to and including 48 inches: Stabilization Time = 30 min
TIs with accuracy larger than 0.0004 inches up to and including 0.0005 inches:
Gage Block lengths up to and including 12 inches: Stabilization Time = 5 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 12 inches up to and including 24 inches: Stabilization Time = 10 min
Gage Block lengths larger than 24 inches up to and including 48 inches: Stabilization Time = 20 min
3.8 If metric scale is not calibrated, annotate and attach a Limited Certification Label stating: Metric scale not
certified.
4 CALIBRATION PROCESS:
NOTE
Unless otherwise specified, verify the results of each test and take corrective
action whenever the test requirement is not met, before proceeding.
4.1.1 For Electronic TIs and TIs with Dial Indicators: Gage on the Surface Plate or the Zeroing Gage Block and set
the TI Electronic Display or Dial Indicator to read zero (0).
4.1.2 For all TIs: Gage on the first preselected Gage Block that represents 25% of the TI range. Record the TI
reading.
4.1.3 Repeat step 4.1.2 except gage on the preselected Gage Blocks that represent 50, 75 and 95% of the TI range.
Record each TI reading.
4.1.4 All recorded TI readings for each of the preselected Gage Blocks must equal the Gage Block length within the
corresponding accuracy listed per Table 1 directive for TI being calibrated.
4.1.5 If TI has a metric scale, continue with step 4.1.6 or 4.1.7 as applicable. If not, proceed to step 4.1.8.
4.1.6 For Mechanical TIs and TIs with Dial Indicators that have a metric scale: Calibrate the metric scale using
either inch or metric Gage Blocks following steps 4.1.1 through 4.1.4.

T.O. 33K6-4-1626-1
4.1.7 For Electronic TIs that have a metric scale: Gage on one of the preselected Gage Blocks from step 3.6.
Change the electronic display to metric and record reading. The recorded reading must equal the metric Gage Block
length within the corresponding accuracy listed per Table 1 directive for TI being calibrated.
4.1.9 If applicable, annotate and attach a Limited Certification Label as per step 3.8.
