Aircraft Communication Systems
The video that I watched gave a good introduction of the essential communication

systems employed in airplane highlighting the need and significance in safety and operations in

the aircraft on the air as well as on the surface. Communication from aircraft to ground stations

and vice versa as well as within the aircraft is a aspect that cannot be over emphasized. This is

not just an exchange of information but it is a way of life which guarantees that pilots, and other

crews are armed with information, aircraft are flown safely, and all operations are effectively

conducted. The finest thing that was offered was a description of how the audio communication

system would function. The primary importance of the audio control unit, into which signals

from the different antennas, microphones and sensors are fed, speaks of how highly developed

current models of aircraft are. Such possibilities of audio control panel and use of different

channels of audio by crew, speaks volumes on the amount of control and safety that is

incorporated in such systems. Time is very sensitive especially when is a high-pressure situation

– well this system ensures that information passed is both relayed in a brief and precise manner.

Also, the overview of the data communication system implementing the ACARS

(Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) was helpful. Communication has

also been made more advanced by ACARS replacing traditional, simple voice communication by

voice and data link which enables instant changing of information. That it is capable of

establishing what mode of communication (HF or VHF) depending on the location of an aircraft

is alone evidence enough that the system is flexible enough to ensure sustained communication

regardless the location of an aircraft be it over the vast area of the continent or in areas that are

seen to be busy with many aircrafts.

The video also took the time to explore the different types of antennas used in the aircraft

and the roles they played including the VHF communication 1, 2 and 3, the transponder and the

voice recorder. Satcom as another layer in some aircraft was even mentioned and it was

interesting to see that people have been experimenting and adding new features to the already

existing communication methods. It also permits aircrafts of being connected even in the most

isolated regions of the world hence improved safety and performance.

Indeed, one of the extraordinary lessons that I learned from this particular video was on

how multiplexed and intertwined are the communication systems of an aircraft. They are not

discrete parts but rather are integrated with one another which makes the message to go through

accurately, consistently and on time. From talking to air traffic control, planning flights and

addressing the crew communication requirements while in the airplane, these systems are the life

of aviation.

Altogether, watching the video gave a profound and comprehensible understanding of

how the Communication systems are structured in aircraft. It built a strong disposition that

aviation business, an industry established on factors of accuracy, safety, and measure, are greatly

dependent on enhanced communication technology. From a person with interest in aviation

systems, I observed that this body of content is informative and it also serves humor well,

showing how communication is vital in today’s aviation systems.
