1) Introduction Objectifs
The objective of this course is to give students a practical knowledge of conducting descriptive statistics
analysis. Students will learn the fundamental descriptive statistics concepts and techniques, enabling
them to summarize, visualize, and describe data effectively. Excel will be introduced as a tool for
conducting descriptive statistics analysis.

Session 1: Introduction and data types
- Overview of descriptive statistics
- Types of variables: categorical (ordinal vs. nominal) and quantitative (continuous vs. discrete)
- Populations, parameters, samples, and statistics
- Good sampling designs
- Forms of bias

Session 2: Displaying and Describing Categorical Data


- Counts, proportions, and percentages
- Frequency and relative frequency tables
- Bar graphs and pie charts
- Contingency tables
- Side-by-side bar graphs and segmented bar graphs
- Excel workshop

Session 3: Displaying and Describing Quantitative Data (Part I)


- Histograms
- Mean
- Standard deviation and variance
- Standardization
- Resistant vs. sensitive statistics
- Outliers
- Excel Workshop

Session 4: Displaying and Describing Quantitative Data (Part II)


- Percentiles
- Range and interquartile range
- Outliers
- Five number summary
- Boxplots
- Excel Workshop

Session 5: Exploring relationships in data


- Scatterplots
- Covariance and correlation
- Correlation and causation
- Basics of regression analysis
- Excel Workshop

l’intervenant
Maria Allayioti is a Professor of Management Practice in the IDS department at ESSEC Business School.
She earned her PhD in Statistics from the University of Southern California in 2023. Prior to her current
role, she worked as a Teaching Professor at the University of Southern California and a data scientist at a
tech startup.
