Most of our questions are usually some form of “tell me about a time you…” and they are driven
by the Amazon Leadership Principles. It’s worth thinking about 2-3 situations you can discuss
for each of the leadership principles so that you have a handful of things to draw from during
your interviews. This is the most challenging part of the interview.
We’re a detail-oriented place, so the interviews go best when you can start out with a terse
overview to help set the context, and then walk us through the details that mattered in the
situation. It’s also helpful to be clear about which things you did individually, which things your
team did, and your peers did.
Try to use multiple situations throughout the day. Sometimes people only share one or two
stories over the course of the day, so we’re left wondering if that’s all they’ve done (even if it
was a great example). Since you have a range of technical, managerial, leadership, and product
background it would be great if you can touch on all of them at some point during the day.
Push back, ask questions, make it interactive, etc. If you get a repeat question let the person
know. If questions to you aren’t clear, ask clarifying questions. When we do it right, the
interview can give a good sense of what a typical day is like here, which is definitely an
interactive exploration of ideas.
Attire here at Amazon is very casual. I usually tell candidates NOT to wear a suit, but do wear
what is comfortable to you for a business casual interview setting (if you are more comfortable
dressing up a bit, that’s fine).
Tasks- Describe the situation he/she was in or the task/objective that needed to be
accomplished. Be specific. What was the goal that you set out to achieve?
Actions- What did you do to meet the goal or satisfy the objective? Be specific and describe your
actions and avoid speaking in general terms. It is important that you describe your own
contributions and the steps you took to meet the goal.
Results- Describe the outcome of your own actions. Was the goal or objective met? How was
the situation resolved and what were the consequences? Be specific and try and answer
questions with data that is measurable.
Here is a link to commonly asked behavioral questions to review. While these are not identical to the
questions we ask, they are very similar in nature.
