DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR GOUT

GOUT: is systemic disease ( i.e condition that occurs throughtout the body) caused by the buildup of
uric acid in the joints. An elevated blood level of uric acid ( called hyperuricemia) occurs when the
liver produces more uric acid than the body can execrete in the urine, or when a diet high in rich foods
(high purine content)produces more uric acid than the kidneys can filter from the blood.

Over time, uric acid in the blood crystallizes & settles in the joint spaces, causing sweeling,
inflammation, stiffness, & pain. Gout usually affects the first metatarsal phalangeal joint of the big toe
or the ankle joints.

Uric acid forms because of purine being metabolized from cellular degeneration and recycling of the
cell’s genetic material.
Uric acid is a waste product of urine metabolism. Purine is Contributed by both body cells & food. A
low purine diet may be advised if you suffer from Gout & Kidney stone.
SYMPTOMS:
• Inflammation
• Pain
• Redness
• Stiffness
• Swelling
FOODS ALLOWED (low purine) FOODS NOT ALLOWED
• Milk & Milk Products( low fat) • Grandular meats,Liver, Kidneys, Brain,
• Eggs etc…
• Cereals • Oatmeal can be taken in moderate
• Vegetables (except listed in not amount
allowed) • Vegetables like spinach, peas, beans,
• Fruits cauliflower & mushrooms
• Sugar & Sweets • Fruits like apple
• Fats & Oils (1-2 tbsp. per day) • Pulses like lentils, beans etc
• Chocolate and cocoa
• Coffee, tea, and carbonated beverages
• Peanut butter and nuts

NOTE:
• Liberal amount of fluid at least 2-3 litres per day is advised as it helps to increase the volume of
urine excreted.
• All alcoholic drinks are not allowed.
• Fat intake should be reduced.
• A gradual weight loss is advisable with moderate exercise for gout patients ,rapid weight loss
can increase blood uric acid levels in body.
• Avoid heavy meals at night.
