What is
Mapathon?

OVERVIEW
The Mapathon is a collaborative map-making competition centered
around creating thematic maps. All Indian and international students/
research scholars/ Faculties are invited by the Department of Civil
Engineering at Chandigarh University to participate in this event. The
primary objective is to develop new tools and methods that enhance
map accuracy and usefulness for communities. The event encourages
the use of free Open-Source Software, such as QGIS, to work with
openly available geospatial datasets. The ultimate aim is to promote
the widespread adoption of maps in various thematic areas.
Additionally, the Mapathon aims to give participants the skills to
customize and use maps to solve the society problems and create
opportunities for Indian youth. During the competition, maps will be
prepared using various data sources, such as observation, remote
sensing, and crowd-sourced data. These datasets hold tremendous
potential in mapping India’s resources, agriculture, climate, disaster
management, rural and urban planning, and to identifying pathways
for future development.
What is the size of the team?
You can participate individually or as a team (max. 3
students). The team can have a mentor; however, the team
should do the exercise. Mentors can mentor multiple
teams and certificates will be issued for each participant
and mentor.

What will be the registration fee for the event?


Team registration fees (non-refundable): Rs 900/- Per
Team

What will be the mode of the Event?


The event is divided into three Phases. Phase 1 is an
online submission of the Proposal for identified problems
from the specified domain. After screening in the first
phase, only selected teams will be called for phase 2.
Phase 2 is the physical mode of competition of maps
making, and making of presentation from 18th Oct to 19
Oct 2024 at Chandigarh University on selected problem.
Phase 3 including the presentation of the submitted maps
and PPTs and the Final Evaluation by the Judges.
