Syllabus Heat Transfer Spring 2024
Office Hours: F – 8 to 10 AM
Extra Help: Besides the scheduled office hours, the professor can answer questions
after class. He is also available any time his office door is open. If the
door is closed – please call or E-mail for an appointment.
TA: Mahima Gupta (mgupta8@lsu.edu) Office Hours: TBA
Prerequisites: Differential and integral calculus, differential equations.
Undergraduate thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
Any system of computer-language for numerical computations.
Texts: “Fundamentals of Heat Transfer” by Bergman and Lavine (8th
Edition). Any older (and cheaper) edition will also work.
References: “Introduction to Heat Transfer” by Arpaci, Selamet and Kao.
“Principles of Heat Transfer” by Kaviany.
“Heat Transfer” by Holman.
Goals/Objectives: This course introduces the three basic modes of heat transfer to the
students. It also demonstrates the methods of analysis of dealing with
each type of heat transfer process. Ability to apply knowledge of heat
transfer to solve thermal engineering problems; ability to design,

CLASS POLICIES:
Short Quizzes (ANNOUNCED): On Jan 29th, Feb 19th, March 4th, March 25th, April 8th, April
29th there will be an in-class quiz of 30 to 50 min duration.
Short Quizzes (UNANNOUNCED): There will be several unannounced in-class quizzes ranging
in duration from 30 minutes to 50 minutes.
Make-up Policy: No make-up quizzes will be given. If a student misses one of the
weekly examinations for an University approved (valid) reason, the student's grade will be
based on the examinations/quizzes he/she has taken, with extra weight on the Final exam.
The in-class Final Exam will be held on Friday May 10th at 12.30 PM.
Arriving Late to a Quiz: If any student arrives more than 10 minutes to a quiz, he/she will
NOT be allowed to take the quiz and he/she would have been “deemed” as missing the quiz
(see Make-up Policy above).
Regrade Policy: All questions regarding the grading of any assignment or exam will be
handled exclusively through written request and will only be accepted within the first week
after the graded assignment/exam is returned. To submit a regrade request, type your name
on a separate sheet of paper and include a brief explanation of why you believe the grading to
be in error. Staple this sheet to the front of your graded report and resubmit it to the
instructor.
Academic Honesty: Collaboration on homework is encouraged. Use of notes or homework
solutions during an examination is considered cheating and is a violation of the Code of Student
Conduct, as is looking at your neighbor's examination while it is being administered. Suspected
violations of the Code of Student Conduct will be handled according to University policy. LSU
Student Code of Conduct (http://saa.lsu.edu/code-student-conduct). Section

8.1.A...“As a guiding principle, the University expects Students to model the principles
outlined in the University Commitment to Community, especially as it pertains to accepting
responsibility for their actions and holding themselves and others to the highest standards of
performance in an academic environment. For example, LSU students are responsible for
submitting work for evaluation that reflects their individual performance and should not
assume any assignment given by any professor is a group effort or work unless specifically
noted on the assignment. In all other cases, students must assume the work is to be done
independently. If the student has a question regarding the instructor’s expectations for
individual assignments, projects, tests, or other items submitted for a grade, it is the student’s
responsibility to seek clarification.” Section 9.0... See this section for a description of
disciplinary sanctions that vary from probation to expulsion.
Attendance: Class attendance is expected, so you are responsible for all material discussed
and presented in class. Lecture material may not directly follow the textbook. If there’s a
discrepancy between my class notes and the textbook, the class notes take precedence. My
notes are not available for copying. Students entering the classroom late are disrespectful to
both the professor and the other students as they are a distraction from the lecture. If a
student anticipates being late for class due to a valid time conflict (e.g., doctor appointment),
the professor should be notified of this conflict prior to that day’s class.
Disability Code: If you have a disability that may have some impact on your work in this
class and for which you may require accommodation, please see an Advisor in the office of
the Disability Services (112 Johnston Hall) so that accommodations may be arranged. After
you receive your accommodation letters, please meet with me to discuss the provisions of
those accommodations as soon as possible.
