Learning outcome

During my internship, my role encompassed photography and editing. I worked

under a senior photographer, to develop the catalogue for their website and
stores. First few days were dedicated to learning and assisting in studio, lighting
and setting up the studio and assisting the photographer in directing the models.
During the second week, we had a shoot planned for 2 days and my majority of
learning in this internship, came from that photoshoot. In the following weeks, I
worked on editing the photographs using lightroom and photoshop. Most of the
edit work was enhancing the lighting and colors along with a few skin touch-
ups. Another day, I accompanied the graphic designer for print ads and
pamplets. It was my first time at the studio and most of my time there was spent
learning the softwares. I had previously worked on Photoshop so I knew basic
tools. I sat through the process of photo editing and suggested changes during
the process. I learnt Lightroom Classic CC, which was new for me as I had
never used it on a desktop. Even though both are a part of Adobe’s Creative
Suite, Lightroom Classic CC is different from Photoshop because it only
supports manipulation in terms of the colors, lighting, retouch etc, however
Photoshop can dynamically manipulate a photograph. Supports non-destructive
editing of images in batch form. This module is more focused on retouching and
manipulations, such as adjusting colour balance, increasing tone, sharpening,
decreasing noise, cropping, straightening, and converting to black-and-white.
Lightroom does not support the creation or editing of non-photographic images
such as drawings, symbols, line arts, diagrams, or maps, nor does it support the
rendering of text or 3D objects. It only contains a few picture editing options,
such as spot removal, brush tweaks, radial and graduated filters, and red eye
removal.

1. Technical Skills Enhancement:

Throughout my photography internship, I significantly improved my technical

skills. I gained proficiency in operating various camera models and accessories,
understanding lighting setups, and utilizing specialized software for photo
editing and retouching. This hands-on experience allowed me to elevate the
quality of my photographs and produce images that align with industry
standards.
2. Studio and On-Location Expertise:

I acquired comprehensive knowledge of studio setups and on-location shooting

techniques. This includes effectively organizing a studio space, managing
equipment, and adapting to different environments for on-location shoots. The
internship provided a valuable opportunity to learn how to create aesthetically
pleasing compositions under various conditions.

3. Creative Conceptualization and Styling:

Participating in model photoshoots and fashion events allowed me to enhance

my creative thinking and styling abilities. I developed an understanding of how
to translate brand aesthetics into visual narratives, contributing to the
conceptualization of fashion shoots and refining my skills in coordinating
outfits and accessories.

4. Collaboration and Communication:

Working closely with diverse teams, including fashion designers, stylists, and
marketing professionals, improved my collaboration and communication skills.
I learned how to effectively communicate my ideas, listen to feedback, and
collaborate with team members to achieve a cohesive vision for each project.
This experience enhanced my ability to work in a dynamic and creative
environment.

5. Brand Understanding and Visual Identity:

The internship deepened my understanding of the women's clothing brand, its

target audience, and visual identity. I learned to align my photography style
with the brand's ethos, ensuring that each image captured reflects the brand's
unique personality and resonates with its customer base.

6. Post-Processing Proficiency:

I honed my post-processing skills through hands-on experience with industry-

standard software. This included mastering techniques for color correction,
retouching, and image enhancement. I can now efficiently edit images while
maintaining the brand's desired aesthetic.

7. Professional Networking:

Attending events, client meetings, and participating in a photography critique

session provided opportunities to expand my professional network. I learned the
importance of building relationships within the industry and gained insights into
client expectations, contributing to my development as a professional
photographer.

8. Problem-Solving and Adaptability:

Encountering challenges during shoots and events taught me to think on my feet

and adapt to unexpected situations. I developed problem-solving skills, ensuring
that the quality of my work remained high despite unforeseen circumstances.

9. Portfolio Development:

The internship allowed me to build a diverse and compelling portfolio. I now

have a collection of work that showcases my growth, versatility, and ability to
capture the essence of a brand through photography.

10. Self-Reflection and Continuous Improvement:

Regular feedback sessions, critiques, and reflections on my work encouraged a

mindset of continuous improvement. I learned to analyze my strengths and areas
for growth, fostering a commitment to ongoing learning and development in the
field of photography.
Limitations

Several problems confronted me during my internship. It was my first venture

into the industry, and it came with a high learning curve. Photography as a
science can only be learnt, but as an art it can only be learned through practice
and I got the experience of that through various photoshoots. I had multitask all
the time, changing lights and assiting the photographer at the same time to
prevent any delays. I also learnt how to work within the code of ethics for
photographers, as the photos could only be edited upto a limit. I had a hard time
learning Lightroom along with Photoshop.

Challenges Faced in My Photography Internship

1. Navigating equipment complexity:

- Challenge: Initially, I found it challenging to navigate through the
complexity of different camera models, lenses, and studio equipment.
Understanding the nuances of each piece took time and hands-on experience.

2. Adapting to diverse environments:

- Challenge: Shifting from studio setups to on-location shoots was a
significant adjustment. Dealing with changing lighting conditions, space
constraints, and unexpected factors required quick adaptability.

3. Time management:
- Challenge: Balancing the myriad of tasks, from pre-shoot preparations to
post-processing, posed a time management challenge. Meeting deadlines while
maintaining quality required careful planning.

4. Communication:
- Challenge: Communicating with clients and interpreting their vision for the
shoot presented a unique challenge. Balancing their expectations with creative
freedom required effective communication skills.
5. Creative block impact:
- Challenge: Encountering creative blocks was inevitable. Finding fresh ideas
for every shoot proved to be a continuous challenge that demanded constant
inspiration-seeking and collaboration.

6. Handling constructive criticism:

- Challenge: Initially, receiving constructive criticism was tough. It took time
to view feedback not as a critique but as a valuable tool for improvement and
growth.

7. Balancing artistic vision with client demands:

- Challenge: Navigating the delicate balance between expressing my artistic
vision and meeting client expectations was a constant negotiation, demanding a
clear understanding of both perspectives.

8. Staying updated with industry trends:

- Challenge: Keeping up with the fast-paced industry trends and technological
advancements was a continuous effort. It required dedicating time to learning
and staying connected with industry developments.

9. Pressure during Events:

- Challenge: Covering events and fashion shows came with the pressure of
capturing moments in real-time. This required maintaining composure,
anticipating challenges, and making quick decisions.

Despite these challenges, each difficulty became an opportunity for growth.

Overcoming these hurdles not only enhanced my technical and creative skills
but also strengthened my resilience and adaptability in a dynamic photography
environment.
Conclusion

In summary, my photography internship provided a holistic and enriching

experience, contributing significantly to my growth as a photographer. The
combination of technical skills, creative understanding, and professional
development has equipped me with the tools to pursue a successful career in the
dynamic world of fashion photography. It was a transforming experience that
provided me with valuable skills in the fields of mass media and photography. I
learnt to work under deadlines and as a team. I learned a new software-
Lightroom Classic CC and how to manipulate lighting in them using curves. I
learnt lighting a studio using strobes, softboxes, reflectors and umbrellas. I also
expanded my area of work and worked with the graphic designer, assisting them
in finding graphics for print ads and pamphlets. This hands-on experience in a
professional studio atmosphere has given me insight into the industry's high
standards, from achieving tight schedules to guaranteeing accuracy.
If the chance arises to join Ibadat in the future, I would eagerly seize it. My
internship was a delightful experience, where the workspace and office
atmosphere were truly enjoyable. It shattered the stereotype that 9-5 office jobs
are inherently boring – at Ibadat it was not only engaging but fun. I did get
bored doing the same work, but when I went for shoots and meetings it was an
amazing experience. I got to learn a lot of things from the organization. It made
me confident enough how to handle clients and any last moment mishaps. The
collaborative team made the difference; they were not only supportive but also
brought a sense of camaraderie and flexibility to the workplace. This positive
environment, coupled with the standards and the lessons in teamwork and time
management, has left me with a lasting impression. Joining Ibadat again would
be an opportunity to relish such a vibrant and fulfilling professional setting.
