    SEALDAH DIVISION SUBURBAN RAILWAY: A LIFELINE FOR THE PEOPLE OF BENGAL’S SUBURBS

    Kolkata, October 6, 2024:

    The suburban railway network of Sealdah Division, operating across the crucial lifelines connecting cities like Halisahar, Kalyani, Chakdah, Krishnanagar, Birati, Duttapukur, Barasat,
    and Bongaon, has played an indispensable role in supporting the livelihoods of millions of suburban residents. This efficient railway system continues to serve as the backbone of
    daily commuting, linking the people of these towns to Kolkata and surrounding industrial, educational, and commercial hubs, empowering them with access to jobs, education,
    healthcare, and essential services.

    For decades, Sealdah Division has ensured connectivity for the working class, students, professionals, and entrepreneurs, with the suburban railway acting as a bridge between
    urban Kolkata and suburban Bengal. In doing so, it has significantly contributed to the socio-economic upliftment of residents in these suburban regions.

    The demand for suburban rail services has seen a remarkable growth over the last five years. Ticket sales have surged, reflecting the increasing reliance on this mode of
    transportation. In the past five years, Sealdah Division has witnessed a consistent increase in suburban ticket sales as reflected below:

    With more commuters utilizing suburban Railway for cost-effective and time-efficient service.

    This year alone, as of August 2024, Sealdah Division has already recorded an unprecedented milestone of Rs. 169.98 crore in ticket sales, showcasing its indispensable role in the
    daily lives of millions.

    With the continued growth in passenger numbers, the Sealdah Division has proactively upgraded its services to accommodate the increasing ridership. To meet the rising needs
    of the passengers on the main line section, the division has introduced 12-coach trains, replacing the earlier 9-coach trains in it's main line section viz. Sealdah-Ranaghat, Sealdah
    Naihati, Sealdah -Krishnanagar etc. This upgrade significantly boosts the capacity of the suburban railway, allowing the trains to carry around 3,00,000 passengers daily.

    This crucial step, aimed at easing congestion and improving comfort for commuters, is expected to facilitate smoother travel experiences, especially during peak hours when the
    demand is at its highest.
