CHEMISTRY IN BIOLOGY
1. Which is true in a covalent bond?
The bond forms when electrons are shared.
2. Elements are placed into the same group on the periodic table of the elements
because they __.
have similar chemical properties
3. Which equation satisfies the law of conservation of matter?
3O2 + 2Al → 2AlO3
4. Biological buffers work to keep pH in your body in a range of __.
6.5 – 7.5
5. Which macromolecule is involved in nearly every function in the human body?
protein
6. Which macromolecule stores genetic information for an organism?
nucleic acid
7. Which macromolecule is responsible for the formation of a cell's membrane?
lipids
8. Positively charged particles in an atom are called __.
proton or protons
9. Two atoms of uranium that differ in their number of neutrons are called __.
isotopes or isotope
10. The hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon atoms in a glucose molecule are held together
by __ bonds.
covalent
11. Ammonia is a compound that forms hydroxide ions when it is dissolved in water; it
is a __.
base
12. The branch of science that studies carbon and its compounds is called __.
organic chemistry
13. Identify the four most abundant elements found in living things. Select all that
apply.
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen

14. Contrast the following mixtures: blood, salt water, and a soil-water mixture.
Blood is a colloid- a heterogeneous mixture that does not settle out; salt water is a
solution- a homogeneous mixture; and a soil-water mixture is a suspension: a
heterogeneous mixture that settles out.
15. What information can a chemist gain about the element gold by looking at the
periodic table?
Its molecular weight, the number of protons in the nucleus, the number of electrons it
has, the number of neutrons it has, whether it is a metal, non-metal, or metalloid
16. Infer why hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is toxic to drink even though it is composed of
the same elements as water.
A compound does not share the same properties as its component elements.
Hydrogen and oxygen are both colorless gasses, but when combined in a 2:1 ratio,
they make the liquid water. Changing the ratio from 2:2 will make a different
compound, in this case hydrogen peroxide. It is a unique compound and will have
unique properties.
17. Why is it important that enzymes can only bind to specific substrates?
Answers will vary. Answers should include that enzymes are only meant to catalyze
specific reactions, and if an enzyme could bind many substrates, it could perform the
reaction on nearly anything, which could create problems for the cell.
18. Discuss why our bodies need enzymes to lower the activation energy of various
biological reactions, instead of simply obtaining enough activation energy from
other sources.
Enzymes reduce the amount of activation energy to an amount the body can
produce. Some reactions require a lot of energy, such as a match burning. We cannot
expose ourselves to extreme temperatures to initiate reactions. Also, enzymes
catalyze very specific reactions. If our bodies were exposed to a large amount of
energy, there would be no way to specify which reaction will be activated.
