Learning Competency: Familiarize oneself with classical music through its famous composer via
fundaments of historical background.

I. OBJECTIVES:

a. Identify relevant modern musical pieces of cartoon show, movie and popular shows with
classical music pieces such as Piano Sonata No. 11, 14, Symphony no.5 etc.
b. Break down fundamental details about the classical music through its famous composers,
and
c. Analyze the analogy of Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical period of music using modified
Venn-Diagram

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Music of the Classical Period (1750-1820)


Subtopic: Classical Period History, Background and Famous Composers.
Reference: Grade 9 Music and Art pp. 32-42
Materials: Visual aids, Speakers, Chalk, Cartolina

III. PROCEDURE:

B. Motivation

The teacher will play songs about the famous songs which are actually used in modern
shows/movies. The learners will identify the show which the classical songs were utilized and
promoted.

C. Lesson Proper
Essential Questions to be answered and explained by the learners

1. What are the characteristics of Classical music?


2. Why is it called the age of reason?
3. Who are the famous composers of the classical period?
4. How can you reflect on their background as motivation in real life circumstances?

The Classical Era, also called “Age of Reason” is the period from 1750-1820. The cultural life
was dominated by the aristocracy, as patrons of musicians and artists generally influenced the arts.
Significant changes in musical forms and styles were made.

Some of the popular composers in this era are:


Franz Joseph Haydn(1732-1809)- He is one of the most prominent composers of the Classical
Period; his life is described as a “rags to riches” story. He came to a poor family and his music led
his rise in social status. “The Clock”, “The Military.” And “Surprise Symphony” are his famous works.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)- is a child prodigy and the most amazing genius in
musical history. At the age of thirteen, he had written sonatas, concertos, symphonies, religious
works and operas and operattas. One of his famous works is “ Eine Kleine Nachtmusik”.

Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827)- was born in Bonn, Germany to a family of musicians and
studied at an early age. His works include the “Missa Solemnis” (1818-1823) and opera “Fidelio”
(1805). He bagan to go deaf in 1796 but did not become a hindrance. He continued composing
through the help of an assistant and hearing gadget. Some of his famous compositions were made
when he was deaf.

IV. EVALUATION:

Analogize the following Musical Period by modified Venn-Diagram. Write it on your notebook.

Analogy of Renaissance, Baroque and Classical Music.

B. Motivation

The teacher will play the Eine Kleine Nacht Musik to the class. The students will describe the
obvious characteristics of the song.

C. Lesson Proper
Vocal and Instrumental Music

1. Sonata. A multi-movement work for solo instrument, Sonata came from the word Sonare
which means to make a sound. This term is applied to a variety of works for a solo instrument such
as keyboard or violin,

2. Sonata Allegro Form. The most important form that developed during the classical era
consists of 3 distinct sections: Exposition, Development and Recapitulation.
3. Concerto. It is a multi-movement work designed for an instrumental soloist and orchestra. It
is a classical form of music intended primarily to emphasize the individuality of the solo instrument to
exhibit the virtuosity and interpretative abilities of the performer.

4. Symphony. A multi-movement work for orchestra, the symphony is derived from the word
sinfonia which literally means “ a harmonious sounding together”. It is a classical music for the whole
orchestra, generally in four movements.

5. Classical Opera. Opera is a drama set to music where singers and musicians perform in a
theatrical setting. The two distinct styles of opera, Opera Seria and Opera Buffa, where developed
during the Classical Period.

IV. EVALUATION:

Answer then activity provided in the book. Pp. 34-35.

After the assessment, the learners will try discussing each question through interactive
interaction.

V. ASSIGNMENT:

Search some of the Filipino modern vocal and instrumental music popular today. Try to compare
the compositions of the classical and modern. Which do you like most? Why? Write your answer on
your notebook.
