Lesson 1-4: Operations on Integers

Introduction
In this lesson, you will learn how to perform operations on integers, including addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division. Integers include positive numbers, negative
numbers, and zero.

Learning Outcomes

- Understand and apply the rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing
integers.
- Solve problems involving operations on integers.
- Use the number line to visually represent operations on integers.

Vocabulary

- Integer: A whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero.

- Positive Integer: An integer greater than zero.
- Negative Integer: An integer less than zero.
- Opposite: Two numbers that are the same distance from zero but on opposite sides of
the number line, such as 3 and -3.

Key Concepts
1. Addition of Integers

- When adding two integers with the same sign (both positive or both negative), add their
absolute values and keep the sign.
- Example: 5 + 3 = 8
- Example: (-5) + (-3) = -8
- When adding two integers with different signs, subtract their absolute values and take
the sign of the larger absolute value.
- Example: 5 + (-3) = 2
- Example: (-5) + 3 = -2

2. Subtraction of Integers

- To subtract an integer, add its opposite. For example, subtracting -3 is the same as
adding +3.
- Example: 5 - 3 = 2
- Example: 5 - (-3) = 8

3. Multiplication of Integers

- When multiplying two integers with the same sign, the result is positive.
- Example: 5 × 3 = 15
- Example: (-5) × (-3) = 15
- When multiplying two integers with different signs, the result is negative.
- Example: (-5) × 3 = -15
- Example: 5 × (-3) = -15

4. Division of Integers

- When dividing two integers with the same sign, the result is positive.
- Example: 15 ÷ 3 = 5
- Example: (-15) ÷ (-3) = 5
- When dividing two integers with different signs, the result is negative.
- Example: (-15) ÷ 3 = -5
- Example: 15 ÷ (-3) = -5

5. Using the Number Line

- Integers can be represented on a number line. Moving right represents adding positive
numbers, and moving left represents adding negative numbers.
- Example: Start at 0. To add -2, move 2 steps to the left. To add +3, move 3 steps to the
right.

Examples

1. Addition: 7 + (-4) = 3
2. Subtraction: 5 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8
3. Multiplication: (-6) × 4 = -24
4. Division: (-18) ÷ 6 = -3
Activity
Draw a number line and solve the following:
- Add 7 and -5.
- Subtract -2 from 4.
- Multiply -4 × 3.
- Divide -20 by 4.

Quick Review

- To add integers with the same sign, add their absolute values and keep the sign.
- To subtract integers, add the opposite.
- Multiplying or dividing integers with the same sign gives a positive result, while
different signs give a negative result.
