1 10
Factorize completely
x2 + 2xy + y 2 + 3x + 3y − 18.
Mathematics JAMB 1999
A. (x+y+6)(x+y-3)
B. (x-y-6)(x-y+3)
C. (x-y+6)(x-y-3)
D. (x+y-6)(x+y+3)
Correct Answer: Option A
Explanation
Expand the options and collect like terms to check which gives the
presented expression.
Expansion of Options A:
(x+y+6)(x+y-3) → x2 + xy − 3x + xy + y 2 − 3y + 6x + 6y − 18
= x2 + 2xy + y 2 + 3x + 3y − 18

= p^2 3p-18
=p^2 6p-3p-18
=p(p 6)-3(p 6)
=(p-3)(p 6)
recall: p=x y,sutitute to the answer

2 factorise dis expression, first look at a
number(constant) i.e -18.wat r its factors .i.e 2,3 6 9 .but
in d option u have 3 and 6. * and since is -18 , always give
d smaller number - nd biger + i. e -3 and +6. ",!!! 6 multiply
by -3 = -18.
i.e (x+y+6)(x+y-3)=x2+xy-3x+xy+y2-3y+6x+6y-18.....
x2+2xy+y2+3x+3y -18....
abidesmondfalex:
note: make sure d positve number comes first and also u
must not change sins be4 d cofficents.

I say Option A is correct bcos when you carefully expand the option it
takes you back to the question..Try it and see how it turns out.

The mathematical solution to the question apart from the wise guesses i
have seen is as follows:
Let (x+y+a)(x+y+b) be the factors. Expand it and collect like terms, you will
get x^2+2xy+y^2+(a+b)x+(a+b)y+ab. Equate it to the original eqn given
and compare the coefficients of x and y. U will have that a+b=3 and
ab=-18. Solve them simultaneously and you will get a quadratic which will
give you two values as 6 and -3. Hence the answer is (x+y+6)(x+y-3).
Option A
