CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Excursion can be defined as an educational tour or a trip by a group of people (i.e students),
usually made for education trip, physical purpose or visitation of agricultural students to
agricultural firms so as to gain experience.

1.1 PURPOSE OF THE EXCURSION

 To further stimulate the interest of agriculture as a noble profession in the


internees.
 It enhances the curriculum. Field trips are rich in educational possibilities as
students learn from actual hands-on experiences, rather than by simply reading or
hearing about something.
 Field trips help the students appreciate the relevance and importance of what they
learn in the classroom

1.2 BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FARM

Pomology and agro services farm limited, located at Odanbon, Surulere local government,
Ogbomoso, Oyo state. Pomology and agro services farm limited is an agro service farm under
the management of Mr. SUNDAY OLUFEMI OLANREWAJU. The farm was established in
2017 with 1 acre of land for pineapple farming but has expanded to 100 acres of land. The
farmland is dominated mainly for pineapple farming. They also train, educate and counsel
farmer.

Pomology is a branches of horticulture that has to deal with fruit crop production e.g.
pineapple, cashew, pawpaw, mango etc.

2.0 MANAGEMENT/PRODUCTION PRACTICES ON THE FARM

2.1. PINEAPPLE FARMING

The pineapple farming is encouraged on large scale, however, it can be grown as backyard

farming with great return. It is profitability lies in it technicalities and good management. The

suitable soil for growing pineapple is sandy loamy soil with PH o between 5.0 -6.0.

Best season for pineapple

Pineapple is a humid tropical plant. It grows well, both in the plains and also at elevations not
exceeding 900 meters. it tolerates neither very high temperature nor frost. The botanical name
of pineapple Ananas Comosus

Pineapple usually flowers from February to April and the fruits are ready from July to
September. Sometimes, off season flowers appear and they produce fruits in September-
December

The spacing of pineapple plants

For commercial viability, high-density cultivation is recommended. Planting density of

63,300plant/ha (22. x 60 x7cm) is ideal for sub-tropical and mildly humid conditions,

whereas for hot and humid conditions a plant density of 53,300 plants/ha. Spaced at 25cm

from plant to plant within a row, 60cm from row to row and 90cm from trench to trench

(25cm x 60cm x 90cm). The unit was supervised by Mr. OLUFEMI.

Fertilizer Applications

Fertilizer is applications is applied after one or two months of planting of pineapple.

There are two types of applying a fertilizer:

 Organic: Poultry dung

 Inorganic: Urea, NPK

3.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMENDATION

3.1 CONCLUSION

This has been a great privilege to be exposed to various aspects of agricultural production and

I strongly believe that this well organized and memorable excursion just came in time for me

to enhance my professional skills as agricultural scientist. It was really a time off exposure to

make me see the great benefits and the bright future of agriculture.

3.2 RECOMENDATION

I recommend that the faculty should engage in more excursions and relating to each

department so that we can learn more about the practical aspect of our department, gain more

knowledge and skills on field to bridge the academic and industrial gap.
