1.How was food and drink produced in the past?

In the past, food and drink used to be mainly manufactured manually and
locally and depended on traditional methods passed down through
generations. In particular, most people grew their own food, with small-scale
farming focusing on crops like grains, fruits, and vegetables, along with
raising livestock for consumed meat. Moreover, all activities like harvesting
crops or milking animals were done by hand, often using simple tools.

2.How have people’s eating and shopping habits changed recently?

Recently, people’s eating and shopping habits have changed significantly

due to technology development, convenience and health concerns. There
has been an increasing demand for healthier, organic, and plant-based foods
as consumers become more health-conscious and want to reduce meat
consumption. Besides, after COVID-19 pandemic and thanks to the
technology growth, many people now prefer to buy groceries and food online
or use delivery services, rather than visiting physical stores. Additionally,
there is increasing interest in sustainable and locally-sourced products, with
consumers choose brands with eco-friendly packaging and producing.

3.Are a lot of new supermarkets being built at the moment? Where

and why?

Currently, the construction of new supermarkets is not happening as rapidly

as it once did, largely due to changing shopping habits to online shopping.
Therefore, many supermarkets are just renovated and upgraded on the
existing location and invested on online platforms. However, new
supermarkets with different customers’ target are still being built in urban
areas which are experiencing population or tourists’ growth and increased
urbanization. With these new supermarkets’ construction, different demands
from various social class, preferences and backgrounds can be met without
each supermarket being overloaded, leading to inadequate supplies.

4.Will more food be produced locally in the future, or will more be

brought in from other places? Why?

Personally, I believe that there will be a growing focus on producing more

food locally due to consumer preferences for fresh, locally-sourced products
and their concerns about environment because long-distance transportation
can create a great amount of pollution to the environment. Moreover,
technological advancements in agriculture are making it easier to grow a
wider variety of foods locally, even in urban environments or regions with
less fertile land. However, some foods that cannot be produced efficiently in
certain local climates will still need to be imported, ensuring diversity and
balance in diets. Thus, while local food production will become more popular,
imported food will continue to play a crucial role in providing foods that are
difficult to grow locally.
