PART III: REVIEW LESSON FOR THE NEXT LECTURE
COORDINATE GEOMETRY:

Distance between two points:

If the coordinates of point A are (x1, y1) and the coordinates of point B are (x2, y2), then distance between

the two points, d = (x 2  x1 )2  (y 2  y1 )2 .

Example: Find the distance between the point (2, –3) and the point (5, 1).
Solution: In this case X1= 2, x2 = 5, y1 = –3 and y2= 1. Substituting into the above formula gives us: d =

(5  2) 2  [1 ( 3)] 2 = ( 3 ) 2 + 42 = 25 = 5

Finding the mid-point:

If the coordinates of point A are (x1, y1) and the coordinates of point B are (x 2, y2), then coordinates of the
x1  x 2 y1  y 2
midpoint (x, y) = ( , ).
2 2
Example: Find the midpoint of the segment connecting the points (2, 4) and (6, 2).
Solution: The average of 2 and 6 is 4 so the first coordinate is 4. The average of 4 and 2 is 3; thus the
second coordinate is 3. The midpoint is (4, 3).

Finding the area of a triangle:

If the three vertices of a triangle are A( x1, y1), B (x2, y2) and C (x3, y3),
1
Area of  ABC = [x1 y1
2

x2 y2

x3 y3

x1 y1]

1
= [x1 y2 + x2 y3 + x3 y1 – y1 x2 – y2 x3 – y3 x1]
2

Slope of a line:
y 2  y1
Slope of a line segment having two coordinate points (x 1 ,y1) and (x2 ,y2) =
x 2  x1
