This paper offers a broad analysis and evaluation of the article “Using Simulation-based

Learning to Increase Outpatient Staff Confidence in Emergency Skills.” The article was written

by Christina Kachulis et al. 2023 and offers broad insight regarding the actualization of nurse-led

learning sessions and emergency simulations, particularly in the outpatient cardiology imaging

unit in Alaska. Additionally, the article looks into the possible unwanted consequences of the

article’s results on streamlining healthcare practice, specifically regarding improving the overall

readiness of the emergency unit in the outpatient unit.

Assigned Article Summary

Kachulis et al. (2023) look into the actualization and results of a nurse-led training forum

by utilizing evidence-based sessions and simulations of the emergency unit to improve the

overall preparedness and confidence of outpatient unit nursing practitioners during emergencies.

The initiative focused on the fact that emergencies rarely present themselves in the outpatient

setting, which translates to a lack of opportunities for practitioners in this unit to develop

emergency preparedness and confidence (Kachulis et al., 2023). The authors noted that “the goal

of the program was to ensure that healthcare staff knew and understood the facility’s

presentation, which enabled them to examine each drawer in the crash cart, identify the roles and

responsibilities needed during a medical emergency, establish who would assign the roles,

determine the equipment needed for each role, review and refresh their understanding of the BLS

and ACLS algorithms, and ask questions” (Kachulis et al., 2023, p. 16). The need for simulations

was to depict a real-life situation and allow the practitioners to develop and actualize skills in

emergency response.

The findings translated to a slight boost in confidence among the practitioners, who also

noted the importance of such programs and requested regular sessions like those to build trust

among themselves (Kachulis et al., 2023). The authors conclude that “regular emergency

simulations can ensure optimal care provision and improve staff confidence and skills in

managing medical emergencies in outpatient settings” (Kachulis et al., 2023, p. 18).

Impact of Assigned Article Content on Future Practice

A comprehensive understanding is attained from the attached article. This has changed

my perception regarding my future healthcare practice. From the article, it is clear that

incorporating simulation-based learning into healthcare practice could have a substantial impact.

The critical point for this article is the vital importance of continuous training and simulation-

based learning to ensure the emergency unit is equipped with practitioners who are ever ready to

handle situations presented, particularly in the outpatient unit, where rare emergency cases are

witnessed. Through implementing simulation-based learning programs, practitioners are

equipped not only with skills to work in a fast-paced environment and the ability to assess and

attend to emergencies effectively but also to develop the continuous need to learn and advance

professionalism within healthcare units.

Additionally, the work stresses the vital need to campaign for the inclusion of simulation-

based training in the facility’s ongoing training forums. By advocating for such programs,

practitioners could become an active part of boosting the overall readiness of nursing

practitioners, which guarantees safe patient care and enhances the quality of services offered in

the outpatient unit.

Conclusion
4

In summary, the attached piece of literature gives a comprehensive understanding of the

effectiveness of simulation-based training in boosting the confidence of nursing practitioners and

their ability to handle emergencies in the outpatient unit. By continuously incorporating

simulation programs and nurse-led learning programs, healthcare bodies are assured of improved

staff readiness and better methods of addressing situations in the same setting. While focusing on

the future, incorporating simulation-based training into healthcare practice is a solid technique

for ensuring overall readiness in emergencies and ideal responses to the same, improving the

quality of care.
