6 Using statistics

WALT

Use mode, median, mean and

range to describe sets of data.
16.6 Using statistics Example #1

The mode is the most common value or

number.

The ages of 10 students are shown below:

11, 14, 11, 12, 11, 11, 12, 9, 13, 14

If a set of data has two modes, it is called

bimodal.
16.6 Using statistics Example #1

The median is the middle value when they

are listed in order of increasing size.

The ages of 10 students are shown below:

11, 14, 11, 12, 11, 11, 12, 9, 13, 14
16.6 Using statistics Example #1

The mean is the sum of all the values

divided by the number of values.

The ages of 10 students are shown below:

11, 14, 11, 12, 11, 11, 12, 9, 13, 14
16.6 Using statistics Example #1

The range is the largest value minus the

smallest value.

The ages of 10 students are shown below:

11, 14, 11, 12, 11, 11, 12, 9, 13, 14
16.6 Using statistics Example #2

The mode is the most common value or

number.

The test marks of students are shown below.

85, 72, 87, 91, 85, 87, 81
16.6 Using statistics Example #2

are listed in order of increasing size.

The test marks of students are shown below.

The table shows the number of days of rain in the first week of
May in a town, recorded over 35 years.

Petra thinks that the mean best represents the data. What do you
think? Which average would you use? Give a reason for your choice.
Choose the median, as there are as many values above as below. The
mean is 2.03 but is affected by a few high values. The mode is too
low, as there are 22 values higher than the mode and only 13 values
that are lower than the mode.

The table shows the students’ test scores.

a. How many students scored:

i. more than the median?
ii. more than the mode?
iii. more than the mean?

b. Which average best represents the data? Give a reason for

your choice of average. Mean is best because there are 70 above
and 50 below the mean, so it sits quite centrally in the whole data.
For example: Median is best because there are 40 above and 50
below, so it sits quite centrally in the whole data.
