1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Historical Background

"Engineering is the profession in which knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences

gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to
utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind." Over
the last few years after my graduation from the university, achieving the balance between
theoretical acquisition and practical implications to the environment has been my focus
and strive.

The practical skills, experiences, and involvements in various areas of civil engineering
over these few years have given me the opportunity to realize some of my strive towards
balancing engineering theory with the practical implications. This report is a compendium
of my engineering experiences acquired from 2003 till date. Over this period, I have been
privileged to work on various engineering assignments ranging from design, construction,
costing and other related assignments.

Prior to my graduation I have been privileged to be practically involved in various

Engineering project which has transformed my theoretical knowledge to practical
experience during my three months Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme
(SIWES) and one year compulsory Industrial Training (IT) programme. This involvement
afforded me the opportunity to learn and improve myself over time while appreciating the
beauty of achieving a perfect blend between the theory and practice of the engineering
profession.

Sequel to the completion of my undergraduate studies in June 1996, I proceeded for the
mandatory National Youth Service Corps (hereafter referred to as “NYSC”) which lasted
from September, 1997 to September, 1998. During this period, I was posted to Lukudo
Construction Limited in Ekpoma, Edo State, where I worked as Asst. Site Engineer. My
responsibilities such as calculation of material quantities to site supervision, offered me
the necessary tools and experience to plunge in to the construction industry vigorously.

Consequent upon the completion of my NYSC, I was employed by JAPAUL Limited as a

Pupil Engineer in Feb, 1999. I was with this firm for 3 years and here I was able to cut my

-3-

teeth in the Engineering practice as well as gaining valuable experience. During this
period, we were involved in various projects at the NLNG Bonny Island Train 3 Phase. I
worked with senior engineers and other engineers within and outside the firm on various
assignments including design reviews, tender preparation and defence, costing of project
and BEME preparation as well as construction supervisions of some very challenging
project activities. Notable among this assignments are the

 (Bonny Water Re-habilitation and Distribution network (NLNG-PCE) Bonny

Island Nigeria)1999-2000
 Construction of Construction of NLNG Offloading Jetty with RoRo Platform

In view of the foregoing, I hereby present a concise report of my post-graduation

experiences.

POSITION/RESPONSIBILITIES.

I worked as a Technical Service Engineer on this project, under the supervision of a senior
seasoned project manager; my responsibilities were as listed below

 Facilitate documentation and template standardization processes

 preparatory works, development of project specific strategies, project engineering,
internal management, procedures and philosophies, review project engineering

Challenges & Solutions

I had numerous challenges, when my responsibilities shifted from technical services to project
management proper. As a Technical officer, I participated more on development of project
standardizations, development of technical documents, such as Project Execution plans, Quality
Plans etc, subsequently I became trained in Project management software such as Microsoft
Projects.(MSP) and Primavera P6 for project monitoring. The challenge here was that the system
of project management system in place at that time in my company was not centralized. The

- 11 -
COUNCIL FOR THE REGULATION OF ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA (COREN) JAN, 2016

resource leveling features were confusing and cumbersome. It was very difficult to see how much
work each resource has across all projects. This increased my work load, as I needed to view
more documents to get all the reports for the S- Curve. Initially it was tough, but continued
practice increased my mastery. However, after persistence on the need to introduce a more
central and web based project management solution, the company introduced Project Insight. I
have learnt delivery deadlines, to be thorough for documentation reviews and adherence to project
schedule. I learnt the importance of team work to achieving set goals and most importantly I
understood the importance of documentation in accordance with ISO 9001:2008.

 Project planning and tracking

 Development of Project Procedures, Method Statements and ITPs

 Implementation of PQP, ITP, Method Statement, check List, Quality Assurance Manual
and Filing system as per Project requirements.

 Quality audits.

 Project management.

Challenges & Solution

Having been trained as a QMS Lead Auditor, i had become multidiscipline and got involved in
company internal and external audits.

It was one of my very first audits, in this case my company was been audited by our client
(Alcon). Is so happened that I was to lead the quality team and we had short just two day notice to
the audit. I initially was confused on where to start from as I was new in the department.

I immediately arranged a meeting where I constituted a team of 4 QC inspectors with specific

tasks of getting all documentations ready while I did the review. We put in longer hours and kept
a close communication. At the end of the audit, we had just one Non Conformance (NCR), which
was not very bad. This experience taught me to be ready at all times, all records to be populated
regularly on daily bases. It also taught me to be more thorough in my analysis and reviews, to
ensure that all (t)s are crossed and all (i)s dotted.

2.3 ALCON CONTRACTING:

Sept. 2009-Dec 2010

Alcon is a leader in multi-disciplinary engineering, construction, oil and gas services with
unrivalled breadth of expertise to match the scope of her skills and the extent of services in any

projects, industrial maintenance and infrastructure development. In addition the company operates
extensively with clients ranging from private and major multinational companies to local
authorities and government establishments with the innate capacity to tackle every type of
commission, from small-scale to major infrastructure projects.

I migrated to Alcon from Epic Atlantic to experience the construction proper of the Gbaran-Ubie
Integrated Oil and Gas Project in the capacity of Project Engineer. I participated in the
construction of all the structures listed above.

2.3.1 List of Projects Involved.

 Gbaran Ubie Integrated oil and Gas Project.

 Design and Consultancy of the 9th Mile- Markurdi Expressway

2.3.2 GBARAN-UBIE INTEGRATED OIL AND GAS PROJECT (FLB)

- 14 -
COUNCIL FOR THE REGULATION OF ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA (COREN) JAN, 2016

Project Cost: The entire project cost is 10 Million USD.

Responsibilities:

 Plan for inspection visits TPI (Third Party Inspectors) and ensure availability of all
necessary documents at inspection release. Also perform supervision activities and
monitoring installation process. Determine significant departures from approved quality
plan and other non-conformances.

 Continuous concrete checks for slump and temperature and ensuring them to be in line
with project specification,

 Convene pre inspection meetings and establish approved ISO quality manual, quality
system and control procedures, Formats etc.

 Preparation of project documents and follow-up on project control activities.

 Internal and external Audits

 Facilitation of milestone and schedule to ensuring timely handover.

Challenges & Solution

The first challenge on this project was the peculiarity of its location, Gbaran community in
Bayelsa State a challenging place for construction activities because of the poor soil with
extremely low bearing capacity. Initially the only option seems to use pile foundation but on
checking the cost against the clients budget, we realised that the use of pile foundations will erode
majority of the funds leaving insufficient fund to complete the first phase of the project. Being
averse to uncompleted project we resolve to do a re-engineering and value engineering design.

The process was new to me but I found it very exciting and educative. At the end of this process
which involves 3 different consultants, we arrived at vibro floatation process as a means of
improving the bearing capacity of the soil as well value engineering to reduce the dead weight of
the building i.e the use of galvanised light steel for roofing instead of the heavier structural steel
members, reduction of some structural members size i.e columns reduced from 300mm X 750mm
to 225mm X 600mm, also ground floor beam reduced from 225mm X 1800mm to 225mm X
1200mm as well as ground floor slab reduced from 300mm to 200mm.

- 15 -
COUNCIL FOR THE REGULATION OF ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA (COREN) JAN, 2016

All these reductions were not done arbitrary but after rigorous process of checks and re-checks to
ensure safety is not compromised in any way.

These activities leading to the value engineering decisions reinforced the maxim that engineering
as a discipline is dynamic and where there is a will there is a way.

It afforded me great joy and pride to be part of the team that brought this feat to bear on this
particular project.

The second challenge encountered in this project was the poor construction practices exhibited by
one of the local subcontractors contracted to build one of the accommodation buildings. On one
of our quality inspections, some wall cracks were discovered. On investigation carried out the
following observations were made:

Inadequate control on various steps on concrete production such as batching, mixing,

transporting, placing, finishing and curing.

Addition of excess water in concrete and mortar mixes

It was resolved that these areas with the crack be demolished and rebuilt using the Acro propping
system of controlled demolition and proper method of concrete production and placement and the
additional cost borne by the subcontractor.

2.4 NIGERIAN WESTMINSTER DREDGING AND MARINES (NWDM):

- 16 -
COUNCIL FOR THE REGULATION OF ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA (COREN) JAN, 2016

2.4.1 List of Projects Involved.

 Olero Creek Restoration Project (SPDC-IOGP).

 Dredging of Olero Creek for the Transportation of the North Water Station (NWS)

2.4.2 OLERO CREEK RESTORATION PROJECT

Project Description: The Olero creek Restoration Project is a 70 million USD Construction and
commissioning subcontract awarded Chevron to Saipem and NWDM. The scope is the
refurbishment and reinstatement of the North Water Station (NWS) and its hook up to the
Interconnecting piping at Olero. The scope involved fabrication, installation, transportation
testing, hook up, commissioning and start up.

The olero creek facilities are located in the Olero creek field in OML-49 lease and consist of:

The North Flow Station (NFS), including production separation and oil shipping.

The North Water Station (NWS), including water treating and injection

existing quality Plan (PQP) and contract specification. Workloads, shift scheduling).

 Review and sign Material and Services Requisitions (MSR) as QA representative.

 Interface with Chevron Nigeria Limited personnel to address QA and construction

concerns.

 Preparing quality procedures complying with ISO 9000: 2000 requirements.

Challenges/Solutions: This project being a core oil & gas Project was administered with the
strictness in which oil and gas project are known for. Safety rather than any other factor takes
over all priority.

Every activity has to be approved with a Permit to Work System, for which a Method statement
and a job hazard analysis (JHA) has to be prepared by the persons in charge of the work to
highlight the work procedures and all hazards identified and mitigation provided in the JHA

This initially I saw as a work delay tactics, as I never considered the delays or so I thought caused
by the procedure to getting a work permit. However I began to appreciate this better after
listening to safety moments shared in meetings as Learning from Experience (LFI)s and attending
some Health Safety and Environments (HSE) Trainings

Today I have come to appreciate safety of personnel and equipment on site as very importance to
achieving project completion without Loss Time Injury (LTI)

2.4.2 DREDGING OF OLERO CREEK FOR THE TRANSPORTATION OF THE

NORTH WATER STATION(NWS).

Project Description: The 8-month dredging activity consisted of removing 1.5 million cu yd of
material from the creek bottom, and placing it in prepared spoil areas. A contract awarded to

- 18 -
COUNCIL FOR THE REGULATION OF ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA (COREN) JAN, 2016

NWDM after hydrographic survey showed the shallow sandy coast line, which is an impedance to
the transportation of the Derrick barge for hook-up.

Project responsibilities:

 Assisting in the development and implementation of proper work practices and techniques
which are implemented uniformly across the Project Site to ensure a high standard of
work and personnel safety in terms of quality, environmental and OH&S standards and
documentation

 Supervision of metal charting to detect, locate and flag off of flow lines in the areas to be
dredged.

 Supervision of construction of Bund walls as containments for dredged spoils.

 Mobilization of all marine equipment required for the dredging and piling activities

standards and documentation are maintained.

 Interpretation of dredge results and sounding of dredged areas for the volume of area
computation.

 Interpretation of site investigation reports, in relation to SPT, CPT for stratification of

subsoil, porosity, void ratio, density of soil etc., to determine penetration of piles.

 Coordination for the installation of Translational Bumper piles around NWS and NFS,
checking for the horizontal and vertical alignment during installation of piles, ensuring
that deviations are within tolerance.

 Supervision of all pile load test and Pile Integrity test, in accordance with project
requirements.

 Supervision of installation of sand bags around the perimeter of the NWS and NFS.

- 19 -
COUNCIL FOR THE REGULATION OF ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA (COREN) JAN, 2016

 Interpretation of Hydrostatic measurements and coordination of underwater sand pad

repairs for the installation of the NWS and NFS.

 Supervision of the steel piles embedded in river floor with steel substructure, connecting
ramp, floatation modules anchor assemblies and concrete decking.

 Report progress, performance, initiatives, issues, and challenges to Construction Site

Manager.

Challenges/Solutions: This dredging project proved to be a challenging experience, because

the 14 villages along the creek bank presented potential work stoppage and ticklish situation.
They came from time to time with demands and sometimes with threats with the claims our
dredged spoils were affecting fishing in the area. So many strategies were put in place such as
the employment of a full time community relations representative to interface directly with the
villagers and obtain legal assistance from the Stake holders to give official status to our
presence. Keeping the dredgers working despite interferences from the local communities
required constant monitoring which is how we managed since it was essential to minimize
down time as the scheduled dredging completion coincided with arrival of barge. In all I
learnt the importance of proactive thinking and the use of competent personnel for specific
activity. A combined team of both the Community relations and the dredging spread helped
in the success of the project on schedule.

Early utilization Project

Project Description: Nigerian Gas Company NGC is a subsidiary of NNPC. It owns and
operates several gas pipelines across Nigeria.

NGC collects processed gas from the different IOCs such as shell and transport it to customers
using their network of pipelines.

Due to recent fluctuation in the gas supply, NGC is experiencing challenges with the required
pressures and capacities in its pipelines. This which affects the continuous gas supply to its
customers especially NOTORE who require a minimum delivery pressure in the system to
operate.

For this purpose a pipeline it was decided by Seven Energy that a pipeline be laid between NGC
station and it’s GRF. Seven Energy therefore awarded the contract to connect its gas receiving
facility at Ikot Abasi to a nearby manifold owned by the Nigerian Gas Company to Evomec
Global Services Limited.

The connection will be done via an 18” gas pipeline. The pipeline connection will also require
some modification and upgrade for the existing facilities of Seven Energy and Nigerian Gas
Company.

The pipeline will be running underground next to IPC fence along GRF main access road and
then run in parallel to an existing 12” gas supply line connecting NGC to IPC. The size of the

- 21 -
COUNCIL FOR THE REGULATION OF ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA (COREN) JAN, 2016

Sales gas at GRF is received via an 18” (dia.) gas pipeline coming from UQUO central processing
facility. The gas is filtered, heated, metered and then exported to potential customers.

The new pipeline to be installed will be running underground next to an existing power plant
(AIPP) of 190MW capacity and will run under high voltage overhead transmission lines

The exact depth of pipe and trench and details regarding to water crossings shall be executed
based on the AFC drawings. The terrain is flat to a certain extent with some minor difference in
elevation with some vegetation along a portion of it.
The pipeline is having the following specifications:

- 22 -
COUNCIL FOR THE REGULATION OF ENGINEERING IN NIGERIA (COREN) JAN, 2016

Challenges/Solutions: The first challenge I encountered in this project was during the installation
of the 6m high PSV rack unto the foundation. It was later discovered that the PSV Rack was
higher in elevation contrary to design. This was a difficult situation considering the fact we were
working in a life facilities and the hazards involved with lifting of items as high as 6m.Two things
could have caused the error, and these are:

Wrong leveling from survey

Wrong fabrication dimensions.

Two options were proposed, that is to re-modify the piping at the same elevation or to cut the
PSV rack to design height. We chose the latter and determined the offshoot, cut the PSV rack and
re-installed it. This period caused a delay and affected the schedule.

In all these I learnt to be more thorough with supervision, as the error could have been noticed if
we had another surveyor check already established points as a control before approval to
commence setting out.

2.3.2. SOUTHERN SWAMP ASSOCIATED GAS SOLUTION (SSAGS) PROJECT

Southern Swamp Associated Gas Solution (SSAGS) is designed to manage natural gas produced
along with oil in the Southern Swamp while maximizing use of existing flow- station assets

The southern swamp comprises 16 fields, of which 12 are currently producing. The fields lie in
the coastal swamp area, 65km south of Warri with 100 oil wells and flow-lines currently
producing through 4 flow-stations (Benesede, Opukushi, Ogbotobo and Tunu). This project was
awarded to Saipem at 800 million USD.

The design, production, installation and testing of piled foundations for the Booster stations and
the Jetty in the 4 locations was awarded to Evomec Global Services Limited.

Project Cost: The cost of the project is about 6 billion naira.

Project Responsibilities:

 Preparation of requisite contract documentations i.e. methodology statement et al

 Co-ordination of Pile accessories fabrication and testing.

 Daily Site Management and coordination of piling activities, including fabrication of piles
and mobilization to site for installation.
 Planning, development and organizing the construction effort to formulate the most cost
effective plan for timely completion within budget.
 Monitoring of construction productivity and schedule performance, investigate reasons for
unsatisfactory performance, and institute recovery measures.
 Defining clear roles and responsibilities and deliverable requirements in terms of both
scope and schedule to all team members,
 Ensuring that all changes to specifications, work scope and drawings are well documented
and managed.
 Attend progress meetings and clientele interface.
 Monitoring project details including progress, risks and opportunities and reporting to
Project Director in a timely manner

Challenges/Solutions:

The challenge encountered on this project has to do with meeting up with the duration of the
project. Piling basically is equipment intensive so any break down on the piling rig, the excavator
will drastically reduce production. We had a situation of equipment just mobilised from Europe, a
2008 digital Banut Piling Rig. It only worked for a month and had a Gear damage. This gear was
not readily available in the market and production had to slow down to about 35%. This really put
pressure on me and my team and immediate solution was solicited. We had to take the damaged
gear to our machinist to look for a suitable material for fabrication. After three trials, we were
able to come up with a suitable material to replace the broken bearing in the gear box and got the
machine working again pending when we received the order made from manufacturer.

This thought me that indeed necessity is the mother of all invention.

Another challenge was that cracks were noticed on some piles at the bottom of the stack due to
weight of other stacked piles above it. I discovered that this is as a result of the uneven transfer of
weight of the stacked piles to the ground. This challenge was overcome by ensuring that the
stacking timbers were placed at the same points along the column of stacked piles. This simple
correction ensures uniform transfer of load to the ground without causing cracks in piles at the
bottom of the stack.

The piles with the crack defects before adoption of this stacking technique were structurally
repaired using a specialised repair grouting cement Masterflow 928.

3. CONCLUSION

Though engineering practice and understanding is a continuous process requiring unending

learning to remain relevant in the field, the experiences I have acquired and detailed in this report
have given me a strong foothold to forge ahead and climb higher in this interesting and dynamic
field of Engineering.

My desire and passion for the practice of engineering with the motive of providing solutions to
the myriad of infrastructural problems currently faced by our great nation Nigeria as well as
contribute positively to humanity also fuelled my desire to seek professional corporate
membership into the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE).

This reports though not exhaustive of all my experiences in the last decade of practising
Engineering after graduation from school, it however summaries the salient and major milestone
experiences garnered both in the office and at the various construction sites I have been opportune
to work in. I accept responsibility for any error this report may contain as well as open to
constructive criticisms on this report.

In conclusion I wish to pledge my allegiance to the society and promise to abide by her codes,
ethics and regulations of practise as I seek corporate membership of the Nigerian Society of
Engineers (NSE).
