3. Ten ball bearing made by a certain process have a mean diameter of 0.5060 cm. with a standard deviation
of 0.0040 cm. assuming that the data may be taken as a random sample from a normal population, construct
a 95% confidence interval for the actual average diameter of the ball bearing?
4. The average monthly electricity consumption for a sample of 100 families is 1250 units. Assuming the
standard deviation of electric consumption of all families is 150 units, construct a 95% confidence interval
estimate of the actual mean electric consumption
5. The following data represent the number of hours that a rechargeable hedge trimmer operates before a
recharges is required:
1.5, 2.2, 0.9, 1.3, 2.0, 1.6, 1.8, 1.5, 2.0, 1.2, 1.7.
Use the sign test to test the hypothesis, at the 0.05 level of significance, that this particular trimmer
operates a median of 1.8 hours before requiring a recharge.
6. Two classes of students are tested using certain competitive exam. The score of a sample of students from
each class is given below.
Class A 45 44 47 48 55 53 55 63
Class B 65 67 77 65 56 67 78 55 66 65 58
Use Mann Whithey – U test to test whether both classes have similar scholastic levels.

7. Drop in diastolic blood pressure (in mm mercury)

Drug A 10 16 10 4 2 14 4
Drug B 33 34 41 36 42 42 32
Test whether there is any difference in the effectiveness of drugs at 0.05 level of significance.
Using Wilcoxon’s signed rank test (Table value for n =7 is 2)
8. With reference to the given data
Brand A 14.9 11.3 13.2 16.6 17.0 14.1 15.4 13.0 16.9

Brand B 15.2 19.8 14.7 18.3 16.2 21.2 18.9 12.2 15.3 19.4

Use the U-test at the 0.01 level of significance to test the two samples come from identical continuous
population or whether the average burning time of Brand A flares is less than that of Brand B flares.
9. Three samples of students are weighted. The results are as follows
Group A 67 66 75 85 55 79 95 93
Group B 55 58 67 63 62 69 72
Group C 48 53 55 61 49 58 57 64 66
Use Kruskal Walis test to check whether all three groups have similar weights.
10. In 30 tosses of a coin the following sequence of heads (H) and tails (T) is obtained.
H TT H T HHH T HH TT H T H T HH T H TT H T HH T H T
(i)Determine the number of runs
(ii)Test at the 0.05 significance level whether the sequence is random.
