When artists use their voices and/or body movements to communicate artistic expression, it is considered an example of
performing arts.
MUSIC
Music is a culturally universal form of art. It is defined as the manipulation of sound and silence. It blends the different elements
such as pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and texture to create sound.
Dance is defined as a regulated and deliberated order of body. These movements have aesthetic value and are often performed
accompanied y music.
Theater or play is a branch of performing arts that often involves integrating and combining the visual and performing arts. It is
defined as a fine art where actor and actresses perform real in front of lived audience.
Paintings may be defined as a two-dimensional, form of art that showcase artistic expression created on a flat surface. Images
are made by applying pigment on a prepared surface using one or a combination of the following tools: brush, palette knife,
spray, finger, etc.
Religious themes were the primary subject for the artworks during the Spanish colonial times.
Historical themes be seen in the works of Angono, Rizal native Carlos "Botong V. Francisco (1912-1969) whose masterpiece
shows Filipino Struggles through History depicts Manila's historical events. This mural is displayed in the Manila City Hall. Other
historical- themed works include Blood Compact, First Mass at Limasawa, etc.
Portraiture paintings are used to commemorate personalities and are seen in many formal institutions such as government
offices. It started with the rise of the Ilustrados during the Spanish colonial times. It was and has been a symbol of one's rise to
power and wealth. Many artists started their careers as portraiture artists such as Iloilo-born Antipas Delotavo (b.1954) and
Rafael del Casal
Still life is a work of art that portrays inanimate objects. It was traditionally composed of a basket or bowl of fruits and flowers in
vases on a table. One of the most notable and earliest still life artists was Paz Paterno. She was born in Sta. Cruz, Manila in 1867
and died in 1914.
Landscapes depict the beauty of the outdoors. It can be that of the natural environment such as the countryside and other rural
scenery, including seascapes focus on the imagery of bodies of water. Some landscapes highlight the hustle and bustle of the city
streets and scenes through urban landscapes. Many early Filipino landscape artists made use of the academic style under the
guidance of Fernando Amorsolo. One such artist was Martino Abellana (1914- 1988) who also became a mentor to generations
of Visayan artists and is referred to as the "Dean of Cebuano Painters."
Nude, as a subject of painting in the Philippines, was rare before twentieth century but has since been an accepted and popular
subject in Philippine contemporary visual arts. Early contemporary nudes can be seen in the works of Fernando Amorsolo (1892-
1972) and his Lavandera series of paintings.
Genres are paintings whose themes showcase people doing everyday activities and chores. Earliest examples of this type in
Philippine history is the Boxer Codex (1590), which illustrates the different social classes and attires of the different inhabitants
of the country at the time. Some genre contemporary artists include the Manila-born Mauro Malang Santos (1928-2017) known
for his collection of fiesta-inspired paintings. The artist from Nueva Ecija, Mario Parial (1944-2013), is praised for his colorful
genre paintings that feature his distinct figurative style.
Nonrepresentational or sometimes called abstract art are works of art that depict subjects or objects that have little no
representation or resemblance found in real life. These artworks may depict objects that manipulated and altered beyond its
typical and use or can be works that have no recognizable examples in reality.
Sculptures are three-dimensional artworks. The classifications of sculptures are traditionally divided into two: free-standing and
relief.
Free standing sculptures, also known as in the round, are sculptures that are raised independently in their given space. It can
often be observed from all points of view.
Reliefs are sculptures that are raised from a background. It can also be classified into bas-relief and high relief depending on the
figure's distance from the background.
Examples of precolonial sculptural artworks include the panolongs of the Torogan, the Maranao Royal house, the sunduk or the
grave markers of the Badjao, and the many interpretations of the Ifugao rice god.
Wood carving is found throughout the different regions and communities of the country. It is used to create and decorate the
items used in one's daily life such as furniture, utensils, shelter, and transportation.
During the Spanish colonization, the most notable sculptural pieces were the santos, which are sculptural representations of
Christ and the Christian saints.
During the American colonial period, classical sculptures portrayed prominent people of society and politics. This was led by the
Bulacan native Guillermo Tolentino (1890-1976) whose sculptural masterpieces include the Bonifacio Monument and the
Oblation in UP Diliman.
Tolentino was a professor at the said university and mentored other classical style sculptors such as Anastacio Caedo (1907-
1990) and Froilan Madriñan (1941-2008).
Caedo was a Batangeño whose most recognizable work is the memorial at the MacArthur landing site in Leyte, Froilan Madriñan
was a Paete artist who was a master in wood carving. He was a great influence to many aspiring artists of Paete, mentoring
contemporary sculptors like Luisito Ac-ac
POTTERY is the art and craft of making pots and other wares using clay or mud. Pottery tradition in the country has survived for
early pottery artifacts have shown the skills and artistry of our pottery makers.
CARVING is the art of manipulating and creating objects by subtracting and shaping solid materials such as wood and stone.
WEAVING is the art of interlacing threads or fibers to create textile, fabric, or other similar products. Philippine textiles are often
made from indigenous plants such as piña, abaca, maguey, and cotton.
METALWORK is the art of creating and manipulating metal to create various items such as jewelry, weapons, etc.
Kundiman is an art song that signifies love and affection for someone. The kundiman, like many art songs, is performed as a solo
vocal composition combined with an instrumental accompaniment to achieve musical harmony.
ballad is traditionally a song that narrates an event in a community. There are many examples of traditional ballads throughout
the Philippines. Some examples are the idangdang of Bukidnon, liyangkit parang sabil of the Tausug, and composo of the
Hiligaynon. A popular example of a traditional ballad would be Yoyoy Villame's (1932-2007) "Magellan"
It must be mentioned that in modern times, the term "ballad" has been applied to describe love songs, and a balladeer is an
artist whose set of songs is primarily composed of romantic songs.
Notable Filipino contemporary ballad composers are Ernani Cuenco (1936-1988) and Jose Mari Chan (b.1945). Some of the most
popular and successful Filipino contemporary balladeers include Regine Velasquez-Alcasid (b.1970),Sarah Geronimo (b.1988),
Jed Madela (b.1977), and many more.
Chamber music is a form of instrumental music composed by a small ensemble wherein each part is played by one player, as
opposed to an orchestra where a part is performed by a group of musicians. Chamber music is usually performed by a group of
three to eight musicians.
Chamber music in the country was pioneered by Dr. Francisco Santiago (1889-1947 and Nicanor S. Abelardo (1893-1934), who
received training abroad, and later on shared with the younger generation of composers.
Choral Music is a musical composition intended to be performed by a group of singers called a choir. The choir is arranged
according to voice categories such as soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.
Liturgical music is songs intended for Christian church services. Its early form was inspired by Jewish chants during their religious
rituals.
Opera is a combination of both music and theater. It is a sung drama that entails collaborative efforts of singers, dancers,
composers, choreographers, etc.
Popular Music is used to describe readily available music to the broad populace. It is an umbrella term that encompasses various
genres of music such as RnB, Rap, Rock, Hip-hop, Dance, etc
