Note:
1. Attempt all the questions.

1. (a) A particle of mass 𝑚 confined to move in a potential 𝑉(𝑥) = 0 for

0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 𝑎 and 𝑉(𝑥) = ∞ otherwise. The wave function of the
particle at time 𝑡 = 0 is given by
5𝜋𝑥 2𝜋𝑥
𝜓(𝑥, 0) = 𝐴 sin 𝑐𝑜𝑠
𝑎 𝑎
(i) Normalize 𝜓(𝑥, 0) (ii) Find 𝜓(𝑥, 𝑡), (iii) Is 𝜓(𝑥, 𝑡) stationary
states?
(5)
(b) What is operator formalism in quantum mechanics? Write the
expectation values of different observable quantities. Show that in
the 1D infinite potential box, the expectation value of the
momentum operator is zero and interpret the result.
(5)

2. (a) How are Cooper pairs formed? Discuss the BCS theory of
Superconductivity. (6)

(b) Draw B –H curve for a ferromagnetic material and explain the

retentivity and coercive field on the curve. (3)
1
(c) What is flux quantization in superconductors? Show explicitly

𝜑 = 𝑛 2 𝑒 and give explanations. (3)

(d) A circular loop conductor having a diameter 50cm carries a current

of 100mA. The loop is placed in a magnetic field having a uniform
flux density of 0.05 weber/m2 with its axis inclined at 60° to the
direction of the field. Calculate the values of magnetic dipole moment
and Torque experienced by the current loop. (3)

3. (a) Discuss briefly 0D,1D,2D and 3D nanomaterials and their density

of states. Discuss the effect of change of size on mechanical properties
of nanoparticles. (6)

(b) Explain in detail the Sol-Gel processes to prepare Nanoparticles.

(3)

4. (a) What is an extrinsic semiconductor? Draw a band diagram of n-

type and p-type semiconductors and hence derive the respective Fermi
energy levels. (6)

(b) For a silicon semiconductor with a band gap of 1.12 eV, find the
position of Fermi level at 300 K. Given 𝑚𝑒∗ = 0.12 𝑚0 and
𝑚𝑛∗ = 0.28 𝑚0.
(3)
(c) Derive the expressions for electron and hole concentrations in an
intrinsic semiconductor. From them, deduce that the Fermi level is
at the middle of the conduction and valance band.
