WEEK 1- DAY 2

CIRCLE

Teacher Juvi
OBJECTIVES:

• Define a circle
• Determine the standard form of
equation of a circle
• Graph a circle in a rectangular
coordinate system
• Recognize the value of the concept
about circles
ACTIVITY 1 Define the following words.

• Circle
• Diameter
• Radius
• Tangent
ACTIVITY 1 Define the following words.

• Circle-plane figure whose points are

equidistant to a point called center.
• Diameter- a segment whose endpoints
are on the circle and passes through the
center
• Radius - a segment drawn from the
center to any point on the circle
• Tangent - a line, ray or segment that
touches the circle at one point
CIRCLES

A circle is the set of all points

equidistant to a fixed point.
Consider a circle plotted on the Cartesian Coordinate plane.
Determine the coordinates of the center and its radius.
EQUATION OF A CIRCLE

𝑃 (𝑥, 𝑦)

Assume that we do not

know the actual
𝐶 (ℎ, 𝑘)

coordinates of the center.

What if the center is at

the point of origin?
ACTIVITY 2

Determine the distance between two points, the

concepts about Pythagorean Theorem will be
used.
Solve the distance between the given two
points.
• (1,2) and (5,5)
• (3,2) and (-1,0)
• (-2,-1) and (3, -1)
STANDARD FORM OF THE EQUATION OF A
CIRCLE

The standard form of the equation of a

circle whose center is at the origin with
radius, r, is
2 2 2
𝑥 +𝑦 =𝑟
For any circle whose center have coordinates (h, k) with
radius, r, the standard form of its equation is
2 2 2
𝑥−ℎ + 𝑦−𝑘 =𝑟
STANDARD FORM
of the equation of a circle

Give the standard form of the equation of the circle

described in each item below.
1. 𝐶 (0, 0), 𝑟 = 8
5
2. Center at the origin, 𝑟 =
3
3. 𝐶 4, 1 and containing 𝑃 5, −2
4. 𝐶 −3, −5 and containing 𝑃 1, 0
EQUATION OF A CIRLE

Solve for the equation of the following

circles:
◉ circle A
◉ circle B
◉ center (5,−6), tangent to the y-axis
◉ center (5,−6), tangent to the x-axis
◉ has a diameter with endpoints
A(−1, 4) and B(4, 2)
IN, ON, or OUT
Consider the circle with equation,
2 2
𝑥 + 2 + 𝑦 − 4 = 100
Determine the location of the following points relative to the
circle.
1. P (-2, 14)
2. Q (-6, 6)
3. R (-10, 9)
4. S (7, 9)
GENERAL FORM
of the equation of a
circle
The general form of the equation of a circle is
2 2
𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 + 𝐶𝑥 + 𝐷𝑦 + 𝐸 = 0
where 𝐴 ≠ 0
GENERAL FORM
of the equation of a circle

Transform the following equations into the general form:

2 2
1. 𝑥 − 2 + 𝑦 + 3 = 11
2 2
2. 𝑥 + 15 + 𝑦 − 1 = 1
2 2
3. 𝑥 − 2 + 𝑦 = 7
2 2
4. 𝑥 + 9 + 𝑦 − 4 = 13
3 2 5 2
5. 𝑥−

Transforming
equations
Transform the following equations into the standard
form:
2 2
1. 𝑥 + 𝑦 − 6𝑥 − 7 = 0
2 2
2. 𝑥 + 𝑦 − 14𝑥 + 2𝑦 = −14
2 2
3. 16𝑥 + 16𝑦 + 96𝑥 − 40𝑦 − 315 = 0
Transforming equations

𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 6𝑥 + 16𝑦 + 48 = 0 Group the terms based on the

variables.
𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 𝑦 2 + 16𝑦 = −48 Complete the square to make
1 2
6 = 3, 3 = 9
1
16 = 8, 82 = 64 each group of terms a perfect
2 2
square trinomial (PST). Add the
𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 9 + 𝑦 2 + 16𝑦 + 64 = −48 + 9 constants of the PSTs to the right
side.
Express the PSTs as squares of
𝒙+𝟑 𝟐 + 𝒚+𝟖 𝟐 = 𝟐𝟓 binomials
QUIZ 1
TRANSFORM TO GENERAL FORM

1. 𝑥 + 2 2 2
+ 𝑦 + 3 = 16
2. 𝑥 + 5 2 + 𝑦2 = 9

Transform to Standard form then give the coordinates of

the center and the length of the radius.

3.𝑥 2
+ 𝑦 2
− 2𝑥 + 8𝑦 − 4 = 0
4. 𝑥 + 𝑦 − 6𝑥 − 2𝑦 − 5 = 0
