Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents The Problem and Its Setting, Literature Review,

Synthesis, Conceptual Frameworks, The Statement of the Problem, Hypothesis,

Scope and Delimitation, and Significance of the Study.

The Problem and its Setting

Academic performance relates to a student's level of achievement,

learning, and success in their educational endeavors. Exams, assignments,

projects, and grades are some of the ways it is frequently measured. Students'

knowledge, skills, abilities, learning strategies, motivation, and external factors

such as instructional quality, resources, and support systems all have an impact

on academic achievement.

Humanities and Social Sciences is a strand offered to senior high school

students under the Academics track. The HUMSS Senior High School strand is

designed for students who intend to take up journalism, communication arts,

liberal arts, education, and other social-science-related courses in college.

Because these courses revolve heavily around interacting with other people, the

Senior High School HUMSS strand is all about improving students’ reading,

writing, and speaking skills. HUMSS is heavily centered on research and will

require students to read, write, and present multiple papers throughout senior

high school (AMA University Online Education (AMA OEd), 2021).

Higher education institutions play a pivotal role in producing qualified

human power that enables solving the real problems of a community. Education

is a powerful agent of change that improves health and livelihoods and

contributes to social stability. At the micro-level, it is associated with better living

standards for individuals through improved productivity; given that those who

have received a higher education tend to have more economic and social

opportunities. At the macro level, education builds well-informed and skilled

human capital, which has been considered an engine of economic growth, that

positively contributes to economic development. However, gaining knowledge,

attitudes, values, and skills through education is not a simple task; rather it is a

long and challenging trip in life. Students are expected to spend much of their

time studying and need to graduate with good academic results (Tadese,

Yeshaneh & Mulu, 2022).

The goal of this study is to determine the senior high school general

average of humanities and social sciences graduates to know if they have a good

grade and the number of academic excellence awardees.

Literature Review

This is present the related literature and studies that are significant in the

study. These consist of books, journals, articles, from inter and books written by

foreign and local authors.

Academic Performance

The level of awareness, attitude, and implementation of the K to 12

science curriculums regarding sex, academic qualification, and teaching length

had no significant difference. Finally, it revealed further that the level of

awareness, attitude, and implementation of the spiral progression curriculum to

students’ academic performance has no significant relationship to the

aforementioned variable. Thus, enhancement programs, skills training, and the

procurement of science laboratory equipment are needed to enhance the

educational process to meet the K to 12 science curriculum set standards

(Balinario, 2021).

The academic performance involves factors such as intellectual level,

personality, motivation, skills, interests, study habits, self-esteem or the teacher-

student relationship. When a gap between the academic performance and the

student’s expected performance occurs, it refers to a diverging performance. An

unsatisfactory academic performance is one that is below the expected

4

performance. Sometimes it can be related to teaching methods. (Marti, 2003, p.

376). For Caballero et al. (2007), academic performance involves meeting goals,

achievements and objectives set in the program or course that a student attends.

These are expressed through grades which are the result of an assessment that

involves passing or not certain tests, subjects or courses. On their part, Torres

and Rodríguez (2006 a cited in Willcox, 2011) define academic performance as

the level of knowledge shown in an area or subject compared to the norm, and it

is generally measured using the grade point average (Lamas H., 2015).

General Average

The K to 12 Basic Education Program uses a standard- and competency-

based grading system. These are found in the curriculum guides. All grades will

be based on the weighted raw score of the learners' summative assessments.

The minimum grade needed to pass a specific learning area is 60, which is

translated to 75 in the report card. The lowest mark that can appear on the report

card is 60 for Quarterly Grades and Final Grades. In a grading period, there is

one Quarterly Assessment but there should be instances for students to produce

Written Work and to demonstrate what they know and can do through

Performance Tasks. There is no required number of Written Work and

Performance Tasks, but these must be spread out over the quarter and used to

assess learners' skills after each unit has been taught. Grades from all student

work are added up. This results in the total score for each component, namely

Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment (DepEd, 2015).

Academic Excellence Award

The Policy Guidelines on Awards and Recognition for the K to 12 Basic

Education Program articulates the recognition given to learners who have shown

exemplary performance in specific areas of their school life. These guidelines are

anchored in the Classroom Assessment for the K to 12 Basic Education Program

a cited in DepEd Order No.8 s., (2015), which supports learners’ holistic

development in order for them to become effective lifelong learners with21st-

century skills. This policy aims to give all learners equal opportunity to excel in

relation to the standard set by the curriculum and focus on their own performance

rather than to compete with one another. It recognizes that all students have their

unique strengths that need to be identified, strengthened, and publicly

acknowledged. In support of the holistic development of Filipino learners, it is

important to veer away from valuing only academic achievement based on high

grades and move toward valuing and celebrating a wide range of student

achievements. The awards aim to acknowledge and promote student excellence

in various areas and to provide formal recognition of student achievements that

can motivate learners to strive for excellence in academic, leadership, and social

responsibility. In effect, the policy encourages all learners to remarkably and

skillfully perform specific kinds of tasks critical to their success in school and at

work. Consequently, the policy will include all learners and encourage them to be

proactive members of their school and community (DepEd Order, 2016).

Synthesis

Academic performance refers to the overall performance of students in

their studies, often measured through grades or test scores. General average

typically refers to the average, the student should not get 75 or below to have a

good grade. Academic excellence awards are given to students who have

demonstrated exceptional academic achievements, if the students can’t get 90%

and above, students would not be able to get or receive academic excellence

awards. Academic excellence awards are given to students who have excelled in

their academic pursuits. Based on the works of literature, there are no studies

about the relationship between academic performance and the general average.

With that, the researcher wants to know the general average and the academic

performance of the graduates and the number of students who received

academic excellence awards.

METHODOLOGY

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the methodology used to

investigate the General Average of Humanities and Social Sciences Graduates

and the Number of Academic Excellence Awardees. This chapter provides a

detailed explanation of the research design, selection of respondents, research

instrument, data gathering procedure, data analysis, and ethical considerations.

Research Design

This study will use descriptive correlational design. Descriptive

correlational design is used in research studies that aim to provide static pictures

of situations as well as establish the relationship between different variables

(McBurney & White, 2009).

Descriptive research design is a research methodology that aims to

describe and examine the characteristics, behaviors, or phenomena of a specific

group or population. It involves collecting data through various methods such as

surveys, interviews, observations, or existing records. The collected data is then

analyzed and summarized to provide a detailed description of the topic being

studied. Descriptive research design is commonly used in social sciences,

psychology, market research, and other fields where the goal is to gather

information about a specific subject without attempting to answer causal

questions.

Selection of Respondents

The respondents to this study are graduates of the humanities and social

sciences. This study will involve seeing the grades of the Humanities and Social

Sciences graduates who graduated senior high school. The graduates are

suitable for this study to know their general average and to know the number of

students who received an academic award in every batch. There will be four (4)

batches of respondents to determine their general average. The respondents

must graduate from King’s College of Marbel Inc., and the respondents should be

in the HUMSS strand. The researcher chose these four batches as respondents

because it needed to know the general average of the humanities and social

sciences graduates. This study will use purposive sampling to choose specific

participants that will help the study meet its goals.

Research Instruments

The researcher will get the general average of the humanities and social

sciences graduates and the number of academic excellence awardees by getting

The researcher used the following range scale in the general average of

the humanities and social sciences graduates.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher wants to know the general average of the respondents.

Before getting the SF10 or the records of the respondents, the researcher asked

permission and prepared a letter to the school registrar and to the respondents

with the help of their adviser and the high school coordinator. During the giving of

the letter of permission, the researcher provides her own list to get the general

average of the respondents, and after listing the general average of the

respondents, the researcher will analyze the general average and separate the

students who received an academic excellence award per batch.

Data Analysis

The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, mean and

SD, Frequency Count, and Pearson r. Descriptive statistics will be used to

summarize the distribution of survey participants' responses. Mean and SD

will be used to get the general average of humanities and social sciences

graduates; a frequency count will be used to know of how many students per

batch who received academic excellence award; and Pearson’s r will be used to

determine the relationship between the general average of humanities and social

sciences graduates and the number of academic excellence awardees.

Ethical Consideration

Ethical considerations must be highlighted as a researcher doing a study on

the general average of HUMSS graduates and the number of academic

excellence awardees. First, the researcher will obtain informed consent from all

participants and the school registrar to get the SF10 to know the general average

of the graduates. Throughout this study, considerations such as confidentiality

and data protection will be strictly adhered to. The respondents have a code

name to be anonymous. Prior to data collection, the relevant research ethics

committee will be consulted. Participants must realize that their participation can

help the researcher to know the SHS general average and the number of

academic awardees of HUMSS graduates.

CHAPTER III

3. Based on the result in Table 3, the two variables wherein the computed

value of 0.832 was described as a very high or strong relationship. It

reveals that if your general average is low, then it can affect your want

to be on the honor list or you cannot able to get the academic

excellence award. Therefore, it is required to accept the null

hypothesis which means there is a significant relationship between the

two variables.
