Introduction to Linux

The Linux operating system is widely used in industry, especially for servers. Why do you
believe this is the case?

One major benefit of Linux is that it is not only cost effective but open-source as well. In the
past, if you wanted to execute the same program on different computers, a programmer would
have to write the program all over again. This is because the program is specific to that one
particular hardware. With Linux, programmers can create, modify, and run programs using
Linux on alternative systems and not need to switch to a different OS in order to do this. I
believe this is a reason why it is so widely used - it is seamless. It is also extremely secure when
protecting against malware and cyber threats.

If you've worked with Linux previously, share your experiences. How would you compare
it with other operating systems—like Windows?

Compared to Windows, I would say Linux is a whole different world. Which is not a bad thing.
But it is definitely different when comparing one to the other. I think Windows is far more
user-friendly. And learning how to use Windows does not seem as difficult. Windows also uses
a graphical user interface, which is much easier on the eyes. For Linux, the mode of operation is
via command line. Meaning you have to know the commands and also how to use them
properly.

If you have little or no experience with it, what are your perceptions?

I have taken this course before but wanted more one-on-one instructor assistance in getting to
know the ins and the outs of how to use it. So I do have some experience inside of course-work,
as to how it works. It can be a bit confusing sometimes because it is quite different from other
Operating Systems. But the fact that it is so prevalent in the industry these days, tells me that
this is most likely just a matter of getting over the learning curve. In time I think this will
become more beneficial in the long run due to the efficiency within the field. I am looking
forward to using Linux and it coming more naturally to me as I continue to implement it in my
studies.
