Lesson Plan: Life Cycles of Animals

Grade Level: 4th Grade

Subject: Science

Duration: 50 minutes

Common Core Standards:

- Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS): 4-LS1-1: Construct an argument that plants
and animals have internal and external structures that function to help them survive in their
environment.

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will understand the different stages in the life cycles of butterflies, frogs, chickens,
and humans.
- Students will be able to compare and contrast the life cycles of these animals.
- Students will engage in hands-on activities to reinforce their understanding of life cycles.

Materials Needed:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Flowchart templates
- Pictures of the life cycle stages (butterfly, frog, chicken, human)
- Scissors and glue
- Worksheets for life cycle comparisons
- Colored pencils or crayons

Lesson Outline:

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Hook: Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever seen a butterfly, frog, or chicken.
Discuss briefly what they know about these animals.
2. Objective Sharing: Explain that today they will learn about the life cycles of these animals
and how they grow and change over time.

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

1. Life Cycle Overview:
- Introduce the concept of a life cycle. Explain that all living things go through stages of
growth.
- Discuss the life cycles of the following animals:
- Butterfly: Egg → Larva (Caterpillar) → Pupa (Chrysalis) → Adult Butterfly
- Frog: Egg → Tadpole → Froglet → Adult Frog
- Chicken: Egg → Chick → Adult Chicken
- Human: Fetus → Baby → Childhood → Adolescence → Adulthood → Old Age
2. Flowchart Creation: Show students how to create a simple flowchart to represent these
stages. Use the whiteboard to illustrate the life cycle of one animal (e.g., butterfly).

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and assign each group one animal
(butterfly, frog, chicken, or human).
2. Each group will:
- Create a flowchart of their assigned animal's life cycle using the templates provided.
- Draw or cut out pictures to represent each stage of the life cycle.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

1. Life Cycle Comparison Worksheet: Hand out worksheets where students will compare the
life cycles of the animals discussed. They will fill in a table with the stages of each animal's life
cycle and write one similarity and one difference between them.

Closure (5 minutes)
1. Review: Ask students to share what they learned about the life cycles of their assigned
animals. Discuss the importance of each stage in the life cycle.
2. Exit Ticket: Have students write down one new fact they learned about life cycles on a sticky
note and place it on the board as they leave.

Assessment:
- Observe group participation during the flowchart activity.
- Review the completed life cycle comparison worksheets for understanding.
- Evaluate exit tickets for individual comprehension of life cycles.

Extensions:
- For students who finish early, provide additional resources or books about other animals' life
cycles.
- Encourage students to research a different animal's life cycle at home and present it in the
next class.

Reflection:
After the lesson, reflect on what worked well and what could be improved for future lessons.
Consider student engagement and understanding of the material.

This lesson plan provides a structured approach to teaching 4th graders about the life cycles of
various animals, incorporating hands-on activities and collaborative learning.
