We all need a balance of different types of food to stay healthy. Ths is called a balanced diet Food provides us with energy. It also allows us to grow and repair damaged parts of our body. We need food to stay healthy. @ 1. Make a list of foods that you think make up a healthy diet and those you think make up a less healthy diet. Include the foods above in your lists. Choose two foods from each list and write an explanation of why you put them in that list. 2. Look at your ‘healthy’ food list. Are there any similarities between the types of foods listed? Do the same with your ‘less healthy’ list. There is no such thing as a bad food. However, an unhealthy diet can be created if you do not have a balance of different types of food. Using reference material, make lists of foods that are rich in the three main food types. Record your findings in a table. Do the types of foods in each list share anything in common? Record your thoughts. 5. Find out how foods rich in fats and oils and in sugars and starches help keep the human body healthy. Some foods, such as biscuits, contain a lot of sugars and fats. Crisps contain a lot of fats and salt. Research shows that it is often the fat or the sugar that makes food taste good. Because we like them so much, we ‘an easily find ourselves eating too much of these foods. ‘As well as the three main food groups, a balanced diet includes small amounts of vitamins. Fruit and ‘vegetables are important in providing us with vitamins. © 6. Using reference material, find out about which fruits and vegetables are high in particular vitamins.
