DISH GARDENING
GUIDELINES & MECHANICS

A Dish Garden is a miniature garden in an


open dish or container and is to be an
established planting with a contrast of
texture, size, color, and height to add interest.
The size and amount of the planted material
should be in proportion to the container.
Plants should be in good shape and the
container should be clean. The size of the
container should be appropriate for a window
display.

Contest Objectives:

The Dish Gardening Contest aims to encourage creativity, promote environmental


awareness, and foster an appreciation for nature by designing beautiful and
sustainable miniature gardens.

Guidelines/Mechanics:

1. The contest is open for Grade 7 & 8 students of PCNHS only.


2. Each section must have two (2) participants as their entry.
3. The dish container must not exceed 20 inches in diameter.
4. Each participant must follow the theme, “The World of Nature in Miniature”
5. Participants can use any type of container (ceramic, plastic, wood, etc).
6. Participants must use real, living plants.
7. Plants should be suitable for dish gardening, such as succulents, small flowering
plans, or herbs.
8. Artificial plants or flowers are not allowed.
9. Accessories such as miniatures, stones, or ornaments can be used to enhance
the presentation, but they should not overpower the plants.
10.Participants are encouraged to use sustainable or recycled materials where
possible.
11. Participants will be given a maximum time of 3 hours to set up their dish
garden on-site.
12. The participants must be in the venue of the contest 30 minutes before the
scheduled time to prepare everything they need.

13. As soon as the contest proper have started, participants are not allowed to go
out or leave the contest venue.
14. Participants must provide everything they need in the contest.
15. Any violation committed in the aforementioned guidelines and mechanics will
lead into 2 points deduction per judge.
16. The decision of the board of judges is final and irrevocable.

Criteria for Judging

Health & Maintenance The health and arrangement of the 20
plants, ensuring that they are well cared
for and thriving.
Adherence to Theme How well the garden reflects the given 15
theme or concept.
Sustainability Use of eco-friendly, recycled, or 10
sustainable materials in the design and
layout.
