AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

➢ Analyze Women’s Status: Look at how women are treated in

different societies.

➢ Identify Challenges: Find out what barriers women face.

➢ Raise Awareness: Promote understanding of women’s rights

issues.

5
ACTION PLAN

In response to the insights gained from the report on "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers"
and the status of women today, I plan to actively promote gender equality
through a multifaceted approach. First, I will educate myself and others by
reading relevant literature and hosting monthly discussion groups to foster open
dialogue. I’ll leverage social media to raise awareness about women's rights
issues and volunteer with local organizations that support women's
empowerment. Additionally, I’ll advocate for educational equity by partnering
with initiatives focused on improving access for girls. Attending workshops and
creating informative materials will further enhance my efforts. By reflecting on
my progress monthly, I aim to adjust my strategies and maximize my impact in
promoting gender equality within my community.

REPORT

Aunt Jennifer's Tigers, a poem by Adrienne Rich, examines the complex

condition of women in modern society through the eyes of Aunt Jennifer,
who makes bright, powerful tigers in needlework while being restricted by
traditional standards and patriarchal oppression. This piece serves as a
powerful metaphor for women's current issues, highlighting both progress
and continued challenges in achieving gender equality.

Knowing the historical context is critical for understanding the current

condition of women. For much of history, women were subjected to
submissive roles, confined to the home, and denied privileges like voting,
education, and property ownership. Feminist groups in the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries campaigned for these fundamental rights, resulting in
substantial legislative and social improvements. In many parts of the
world, women now have more freedom and possibilities than ever before.
However, the struggle is far from over, as society conventions and cultural
beliefs continue to limit opportunities.

Tigers indicate strength, confidence, and independence, all of which Aunt

Jennifer lacks. This dichotomy represents a larger issue in today's society:
women's struggle to express themselves authentically in a world that
frequently imposes restricted restrictions. While women have made
progress in a variety of fields—politics, economics, the arts, and
sciences—the urge to conform to traditional standards persists.

The media frequently plays an important influence in developing public

opinions of women. Although there are more female leaders and
representations in positions of power, stereotypes remain prevalent.
Women are commonly presented in ways that highlight their physical
beauty or relationship status above their accomplishments or abilities. This
can block progress toward actual gender equality since these

7
representations perpetuate the idea that a woman's worth is determined by
her appearance or job as a caregiver.

The struggle to balance work and family life can hinder ambition and
personal development. Many women continue to suffer public criticism for
choosing their jobs above traditional responsibilities as moms or
homemakers. This conflict can lead to a lack of support for working
moms, who frequently face ineffective parental leave laws and workplace
cultures that do not meet their requirements.

A further important aspect of women's condition today is the prevalence of

gender-based violence. Despite advances in legal safeguards and social
awareness, many women still face abuse at home as well as in the
community. Several studies have found that a considerable percentage of
women have experienced physical or sexual assault at some point in their
lives. This reality emphasizes the critical need for societal change, which
includes education, legal reform, and community support to protect
women and promote equality.

On the brighter side, education has become an effective tool for women
striving to express their rights and attain personal and professional
objectives. Increased access to education has enabled women to seek jobs
and leadership positions that were previously unavailable to them.
Organizations around the world are working to encourage girls' education,
realizing that educating women benefits entire communities.

The poem captures the opposing perspectives of women's lives—the vivid,

powerful tigers they strive to be versus the limits imposed by society. As
we move forward, we must acknowledge these challenges and fight toward
a future in which every woman can scream as passionately as Aunt
Jennifer's tigers. Only then can we hope to build a world in which women
may express themselves authentically without fear of being judged or
limited.

INTERVIEW

Adrienne Rich: What barriers do you face in your everyday life as a

woman?
Aunt Jennifer: The biggest barriers are the traditional roles imposed on
me, both at home and in society. They limit my opportunities and force me
to prioritize others over myself.

Adrienne Rich:How do you cope with the fear that comes from these
constraints?
Aunt Jennifer: I find solace in my art. Each stitch is a small act of
rebellion, a way to express my true self despite the fear of judgment or
rejection.

Adrienne Rich:Do you see a future where women are more empowered?
Aunt Jennifer:I hope so. Women today are starting to find their voices and
challenge the norms. I believe that, with time, change is possible.

Adrienne Rich:What role do you think community support plays in

women's empowerment?
Aunt Jennifer:Community support is vital. When women uplift one
another, we can share experiences, offer encouragement, and inspire each
other to break free from our constraints.

Adrienne Rich:How does your experience reflect the struggles of women

today?
Aunt Jennifer:Many women still face similar challenges—balancing roles,
societal pressures, and expectations. My story is just one of many that
highlight these ongoing struggles.

9
Adrienne Rich:What message do you hope your needlework conveys to
others?
Aunt Jennifer: I hope it conveys that creativity can be a form of resistance.
It shows that even within limitations, we can find ways to express our true
selves.

Adrienne Rich:If you could change one thing about your current situation,
what would it be?
Aunt Jennifer: I would change the societal belief that women should be
confined to certain roles. I want to live in a world where women can fully
pursue their ambitions without fear or limitation.

Adrienne Rich:Do you think your art helps you reclaim any part of your
identity?
Aunt Jennifer: Yes, creating these tigers allows me to express my inner
desires and frustrations. In those moments, I feel a fleeting sense of
freedom.

Adrienne Rich:What do the tigers you create symbolize for you?

Aunt Jennifer: The tigers represent strength and freedom—qualities I long
for but feel I lack in my own life. They embody the power I wish I could
express.

Adrienne Rich:How do societal expectations influence your sense of self?

Aunt Jennifer: Society often tells me that my worth is tied to being a good
wife and mother. These expectations make it hard to pursue my own
passions without guilt.

STUDENT REFLECTION

My knowledge of gender issues has increased as a result of my analysis of

Adrienne Rich's poem "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers" and the report on the
current state of women. Many women today battle with similar issues,
which are shown in the poem's juxtaposition between Aunt Jennifer's
colorful tigers and her harsh reality.

The report covers current issues like the gender pay gap and gender-based
violence, while also highlighting the historical gains gained by women
through feminist movements. My personal experiences have led me to the
depressing conclusion that women are still burdened by society
expectations and outdated gender norms.

Perceptions of women are also greatly influenced by media representation,

which frequently emphasizes appearance over accomplishments. I'm now
more skeptical of the media I watch and listen to.

Education is becoming a more effective instrument for female

empowerment, but access to it is still uneven. This encourages me to speak
up in favor of educational justice.

All in all, this contemplation strengthens my conviction that although there

has been progress, much more has to be done to attain actual gender
equality. I feel privileged to be able to contribute to this crucial discussion
as a student.
