William Shakespeare’s play “The tempest” which some scholars claim was based
on real-life Bermuda tragedy may have enhanced the era’s aura of mystery.
Nonetheless, reports of unexplained disappearances did not really capture the
public attention until the 20th century. A shipwreck occurred in March 1918 when
the USS cyclops, a 542-foot-long Navy cargo ship over 300 men and 10000 tons
of manganese ore on board, sank somewhere between Barbados and Chesapeake

Bay. The Cyclops never sent out an SOS distress call despite being equipped to
do so, and extensive search found no wreckage. “Only God and the sea know
what happened to the great ship.” U.S. president Woodrow Wilson later said. In
1941, two of the Cyclops’ sister ships, similarly vanished without trace along
nearly the same route.
Elizabeth I was queen of England for forty-five years, from 1558 to 1603. During
her reign many exciting things happened in England and overseas. Sometimes the
country was in danger, as when Spain tried to invade.
Many famous Englishmen lived during the time Elizabeth was queen. There were
heroes like Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh, who went exploring in parts
of the world that had not long been discovered. They returned to England with
wonderful stories of happenings far away. They brought new plants from America,
potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco, and also the first turkeys. English ships traded
with India, Russia and remote countries where few foreigners had ever been.
Men who stayed at home also helped make England a great country. It was once
said that during Elizabeth's reign, England became a nest of singing birds. Men
like William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and Edmund Spenser wrote
splendid plays and poetry that will last forever and ever.
1) How long did Queen Elizabeth I reign England?
