A (a) ABC is a triangular plot of land in which
angle ACB is a right angle. The length of AB is
x–2 2x + 3 (2x + 3) metres, the length of BC is (2x – 1) metres
and the length of AC is (x – 2) metres.

i) Use Pythagoras Theorem to form an equation involving x and show that it reduces to
x² - 20x – 4 = 0 [3]

ii) Solve the equation x² - 20x – 4 = 0, giving both answers correct to one decimal place

8. (a) The cost of sitting for an examination consists of two parts. There is a fixed charge called
Entry fee of K25, 500 and an additional charge of K6, 500 for each subject.
(i) Makokwa intends to sit for 3 subjects. Calculate the total amount she has to pay [1]

(ii) Chibuye paid a total of K64, 500. Calculate the number of subjects he will sit for [2]

(b) Use a plain paper to answer this question.


i) Using ruler and compass, construct triangle ABC, in which AB = 8cm, BC = 7cm and
AC = 3cm. [2]
ii) Measure and write down, the size of the largest angle in the triangle [1]

9. Answer the whole of this question on a sheet of graph paper.

The variable x and y are connected by the equation y = 10/x + 2x – 7.


Some corresponding values of x and y correct to 1 decimal place where necessary are given
in the table below.

(a) Calculate the value of p, giving your answer correct to 1 decimal place [1]

(b) Using a scale of 4cm to 1 unit on the x-axis and 2cm to 1 unit on the y-axis, draw a horizontal
x-axis to 1≤x≤4 and a vertical y-axis for 0≤y≤6. On your axes, draw the graph of
y = 10/x + 2x – 7 [3]

(c) Showing your method clearly, use your graph to solve the equation 2x + 10/x = 10 [2]

(d) By drawing a suitable tangent, find the gradient of the curve at the point where x = 1.5 [2]

(e) (i) On the same axes, draw the graph of the straight line y = -¾x + 5 [2]
(ii) Using your graph solve the equation 10/x + 2x – 7 = -¾x + 5 [2]

10. The diagram below shows the farmland PQRS for Mr. Hakasenke. The straight line PQ, QR, and SP
represents the boundary marked with a wire fence. It is given that PQ = 28km, PS = 35km and
SR = 25.5km.

(a) Given that the area of ∆PQS is 424.34km², calculate the size of angle QPS [3]

(b) Mr Hakasenke intends to have a straight road from Q to S which makes an angle of 40 with
the fence QR.

(ii) If the road construction company charges K11.5 million per kilometer, find the total
amount Mr. Hakasenke has to pay for the road QS [2]
(iii) Find the size of angle QRS [3]
