ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

It gives me immense pleasure to be associated with this

project on "Double Split"The project helped
me in expanding my knowledge on the topic and helped
in liking theoretical knowledge with practical knowledge.
The present project has been completed under the
supervision of our chemistry teacher Mrs.Prathiba
Kharche.
I am highly indebted to his able guidance, valuable
suggestions,and constant encouragement during the
course of this work.
I would like to express my gratitude and sincere thanks
to our principal, Mrs.lshwari K Sharma, for the moral
support extended during the tenure of this project.

INTRODUCTION:
In the experiment, a beam of light is directed at a barrier with two slits,
and the light's trajectory is observed on a screen behind the barrier.
When light passes through two slits, it splits into two waves that interfere
with each other on the other side of the barrier. This interference
creates a pattern of alternating light and dark regions on the screen.
Wave-particle duality:
The experiment demonstrates that quantum systems behave like waves
when they aren't being observed, but like particles when they are. For
example, even when researchers fire photons at the barrier one at a time,
an interference pattern still appears, as if the photons split in two and
passed through both slits. Uncertainty principle:
The uncertainty principle prevents the simultaneous observation of the
wave-like and particle-like nature of matter and energy. For example, if
researchers try to determine which slit a photon passed through by
placing a detector at either slit, the detector will disturb the photon's
momentum and destroy the interference pattern.
What Is Young’s Double Slit
Experiment?
Young’s double slit experiment uses two coherent sources of
light placed at a small distance apart Usually, only a few
orders of magnitude greater than the wavelength of light are
used Young’s double slit experiment helped in understanding
the wave theory of light, which is explained with the help of a
diagram As shown, a screen or photodetector is placed at a
large distance, ‘D’, away from the slits

Each source can be considered a source of coherent light

waves At any point on the screen at a distance ‘y’ from the
centre, the waves travel distances l1 and l2 to create a path
difference of Δl at the point The point approximately
subtends an angle of θ at the sources
1. EXPERIMENT
AIM: To demonstrate the DOUBLE SPLIT EXPERIMENT
2.
MATERIALS REQUIRED: Laser, Measuring tape,Hair,
Card board,Laser light,Screen
3.
THEORY: When a laser encounters an object, it becomes
distorted resulting in diffraction, or the bending of light.
In this experiment, a piece of human hair is used to
demonstrate the process.
Light can act as a wave, and when it encounters an
object it splits into regular patters of lines. The size of
the pattern from this
diffraction is related to the
size of the object that
caused the scatter.
Splitting of light
with a hair:
Thin objects, such as a strand of hair,
also diffract light. Light that passes
around the hair spreads out, overlaps,
and produces a diffraction pattern.
The monochromatic light is passed
through the fringe and passing through
it we could see the patterns, at the
centre we have a bright light which is
denoted as central maxima and beside it
we have 1st,2nd,3rd maxima and minima
respectively.
PRECAUTIONS :
1.Do not look at the laser beam.
2.Do not point the laser at anybody directly to the eyes.
3.Do not point the laser beam at any reflecting surface
such asmirror etc.
SOURCES OF ERROR :
1.Diffraction of laser light may differ due to dust
particles presentin the path of the light.
