Introduction
In the summer of 2024, I, Ankita Sarkar, embarked on an enriching internship
with the Voluntary Health Association of Tripura (VHAT), a distinguished non-
governmental organization dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable
populations. My placement was at Unmesh Children Home for Boys, an institution
that provides care and support to orphaned and disadvantaged boys. This report
aims to encapsulate my experiences, the objectives of my internship, the
activities I engaged in, the challenges faced, and the insights gained throughout
this period.

Objectives of the Internship

The primary objectives of my internship were as follows:
1. Educational and Developmental Support: To contribute to the
educational and developmental needs of the children at Unmesh Children
Home. This involved providing academic assistance and engaging in
activities designed to foster personal growth.
2. Awareness and Education: To raise awareness among the children
about the legal profession and available scholarship opportunities that
could aid in their future academic and professional pursuits.
3. Understanding NGO Operations: To gain a deeper understanding of the
operational dynamics of a non-governmental organization, particularly in
the context of working with vulnerable children.

Activities and Responsibilities

During my internship, I was involved in a range of activities that contributed to
the objectives outlined above:
1. Educational Support: My primary responsibility was to assist the
children with their academic studies. This included:
o Individual Tutoring: I provided one-on-one tutoring in subjects
where the children needed extra help. This personalized approach
was intended to address specific learning gaps and improve their
overall academic performance.
o Group Study Sessions: I organized and facilitated group study
sessions to encourage collaborative learning and peer support.
These sessions helped in reinforcing classroom concepts and
promoting a sense of teamwork among the children.

2. Skill Development: Recognizing the importance of holistic development,

I engaged the children in various extracurricular activities:
o Creative Arts: I taught singing and painting, which were aimed at
fostering creativity and self-expression. These activities also
provided a therapeutic outlet for the children and enhanced their
artistic skills.
o Technical Skills: Basic laptop training was provided to help the
children develop essential computer skills. This included navigating
software applications, typing, and internet usage, which are crucial
for their academic and future career prospects.
3. Legal Awareness: I aimed to inspire and inform the children about
potential career paths and opportunities:
o Legal Profession Introduction: I conducted sessions to explain
the role of legal professionals and the importance of legal
knowledge. This was intended to broaden their understanding of
various career options and the impact of law on societal
development.
o Scholarship Information: I shared information about scholarship
opportunities available for higher education. This included guidance
on application processes and eligibility criteria, which could help the
children pursue further studies and achieve their academic goals.
4. Relationship Building: Building a rapport with the children was a crucial
aspect of my role:
o Personal Interactions: I spent time getting to know each child,
understanding their individual needs, interests, and aspirations. This
helped in tailoring my approach to effectively support their personal
and educational growth.
o Emotional Support: Providing emotional support and creating a
nurturing environment was vital. I aimed to be a positive role model
and a source of encouragement, helping the children build
confidence and resilience.

Challenges and Solutions

Throughout my internship, I encountered several challenges, which I addressed
as follows:
 Building Trust: Initially, the children were hesitant to engage with me
due to unfamiliarity. This was addressed through consistent and genuine
interactions. By showing patience, understanding, and commitment, I was
able to gradually earn their trust and create a comfortable environment for
learning and development.
 Resource Constraints: Limited resources posed challenges in providing
diverse educational and extracurricular opportunities. I worked within
these constraints by focusing on maximizing the impact of available
resources and seeking creative solutions to overcome limitations.
 Balancing Multiple Responsibilities: Managing various tasks and
responsibilities required effective time management and organizational
skills. I prioritized tasks, set clear goals, and maintained open
communication with the staff to ensure that all responsibilities were
addressed efficiently.
Outcomes and Reflections
The internship proved to be an immensely rewarding experience. Key outcomes
and reflections include:
 Enhanced Understanding of NGO Operations: I gained valuable
insights into the functioning of an NGO, particularly in the context of child
welfare. This experience highlighted the importance of dedicated support,
structured programs, and community involvement in making a meaningful
difference in the lives of vulnerable children.
 Personal Growth: The internship fostered significant personal growth,
including improved communication skills, adaptability, and empathy.
Engaging with the children and staff provided a deeper understanding of
the challenges faced by marginalized communities and the impact of
compassionate support.
 Professional Development: Exposure to the legal profession and
scholarship opportunities broadened my perspective on career paths and
professional development. The experience reinforced my commitment to
contributing to societal well-being and inspired me to explore further
opportunities in the field of social justice and advocacy.

Conclusion
The summer internship at the Unmesh Children Home under the auspices of the
Voluntary Health Association of Tripura has been an enriching and invaluable
experience. It has provided me with profound insights into the operational
aspects of child welfare, as well as the challenges and opportunities within the
sector. My interactions with the children and the various activities I participated
in have significantly contributed to my understanding of the social and legal
dynamics at play in such environments.
The guidance and support provided by the staff at VHAT, particularly the
Executive Director, Mr. Sujit Ghosh, have been instrumental in shaping my
learning journey. The experiences and lessons acquired during this internship will
undoubtedly influence my future academic and professional endeavors.
