MATH 9
QUARTER 1 – WEEK 1

TOPIC: QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

TASK ANALYSIS:
Illustrates Quadratic Equation (M9AL–Ia-1)

SUB – TOPICS:
• Write quadratic equations in standard
form.
• Identify the values of a, b, and c. GUIDE
CARD:

The name Quadratic comes from "quad" meaning square, because the variable
gets squared (like x2). It is also called an "Equation of Degree 2" (because of the "2" on the
x). Quadratic Equation - in one variable is a mathematical sentence of degree 2 that can
be written in the following standard form.
UNDERSTAND MORE!!!
Examples of quadratic Examples of quadratic equations
equations in the Standard lacking the linear coefficient or the "bx":
Form (ax² + bx + c = 0):
1. 2x² - 64 = 0
1.6 x² + 11x - 35 = 0 2. x² - 16 = 0
2 . 2x² - 4x - 2 = 0 3. 9x² + 49 = 0
3 . -4x² - 7x +12 = 0

Examples of quadratic equations lacking the

constant term or "c":

1. x² - 7x = 0
2. 2x² + 8x = 0
3. -x² - 9x = 0

Examples of quadratic equation in factored form:

1. (x + 2)(x - 3) = 0 [upon computing becomes x² -1x - 6 = 0]

2. (x + 1)(x + 6) = 0 [upon computing becomes x ² + 7x + 6 = 0]
3. (x - 6)(x + 1) = 0 [upon computing becomes x² - 5x - 6 = 0]

Examples of other forms of quadratic equations:

1. x(x - 2) = 4 [upon multiplying and moving the 4 becomes x² - 2x - 4 = 0]

2. x(2x + 3) = 12 [upon multiplying and moving the 12 becomes 2x ² - 3x - 12 =
0]
3. 3x(x + 8) = -2 [upon multiplying and moving the -2 becomes 3x² + 24x + 2
= 0]

EXAMPLE #2
3x (x - 2) = 10

*This is also a quadratic equation. However, it is not written

in standard form. To write the equation in standard form,
expand the product and make one side of the equation zero
as shown below. Note! Now,
the
equation
becomes in
standard
form
wherein:
a= 3, b= -6,
and c= -10.

ACTIVITY 1! Quadratic or Not? ACTIVITY 2

Set Me to Your Standard!
Identify which of the
following
a quadratic
is QE if it
or not. Write
is a
quadratic
equation and NQE if it is not.

_______
1. 3m +
8 = 15 _______
2 _______
2 . x - 5x +
_______
10 =0 3 . 12
- 4x = 0 _______
4 . 2t2 - 7t =
12
2
5. 6 - 2x + 3x
=0
Example 3

The equtaion (2x + 5) (x - 1) = -6

-it is also a quadratic equation but not written in standard form. Just like example # 2,
we can write it in st andard form if we expand the product and make one side of the
equation zero. To solve, use the “FOIL METHOD”
Solution:

(2x + 5) (x - 1) = -6

2x2 - 2x + 5x - 5 = -6 (by using foil method)

2x2 + 3x - 5 = -6 (combine like terms: -2x and +5x )

2x2 + 3x - 5 + 6 = -6 + 6 (find the additive inverse of -6 and add to both sides of the equation to
make the right side equal to 0, then simplify)

2x2 + 3x + 1 = 0

*Now the equation 2x2 + 3x + 1 = 0 is in standard form. Wherein the values of a= 2, b=3, and c= 1.

ASSESSMENT CARD!

Test I. Find the values of a, b, and c.

Test II. Write the following in standard form.

ENRICHMENT!!!
PART 1: FACT or BLUFF?
Write FACT if the equation is an example of quadratic equation and BLUFF if
otherwise.
1. 20x² -15x - 10 = 0
2. x² -x - 3 = 0
3. 2x + 4 = 0
4. (m+3)(m-2)=0
5. 5 (s - 3) =5
PART 2: Set Me to your Standards!

Arranged the following in standard form and find the values of a, b, and c.

Standard Form a b c
1. x² + 2x = 1

2. (x - 5)(x + 2)=0

3. 6x² = - 144

ENRICHMENT
PART 1:
1. FACT
2. FACT
3. BLUFF
4. FACT
5. BLUFF

Standard Form a b c

1. x² + 2x = 1 X2 + 2x = 1

X2 + 2x -1 = 1 - 1 1 2 -1

X2 + 2x -1 = 0

2. (x - 5)(x + 2)=0 (x - 5)(x + 2)=0

(x)(x) + (x)(2) + (-5)(x) + (-5)(2) =0 2 -3 -10

2x2 + 2x - 5x -10 =0

2x2 -3x - 10 =0

3. 6x² = - 144 6x² = - 144

6x2 + 144 = -144 + 144 6 0 144

6x2 + 144 = 0
