Assignment Instructions
• This assignment is due at 23:59 (Edinburgh Time) on the date specified above
• Your solutions can be written or typeset. No paper submission is necessary
• Gradescope submission link available on assignment page in Canvas
• The assessment criteria are listed on the assignment page
• Start each question on a new page (Parts of the same question can be on the same page).
• This assignment contains 5 questions worth a total of 30 marks. Marks are listed with each
question. An additional 1 mark is awarded for meeting the submission standards.
Questions:
w
1. (6 marks) (a) Let z = 4 − 3i and w = 2 + i. Evaluate w2 and z in Cartesian form (i.e. a + ib).
(b) The quadratic formula you learned in school to solve ax2 + bx + c = 0 can be used with
complex coefficients as well. Use the quadratic formula to find the complex solutions to
3
z 2 + (1 + 2i)z − = 0.
2
2. (7 marks)
(a) Find the solutions of w4 = −4 in exponential form (i.e. as reiθ ). Hence express the roots
of Q(w) = w4 + 4 in Cartesian form, so as a + ib.
(b) Consider the polynomial
P (z) = (z − 1)4 + 4
and compare it to Q(w). By a suitable substitution of variables find the roots of P (z) = 0
using your solutions to Q(w) = 0 from the previous part.
(c) Sketch and label your solutions z from the previous part in the Argand diagram.
3. (5 marks)
(a) Use the exponential form of cos(x) (i.e. Theorem 4.53) to express cos4 (x) in terms of
exponentials.
(b) Expand the expression for cos4 (x) found above and manipulate by grouping similar expo-
nents to show that
1 1 3
cos4 (x) = cos(4x) + cos(2x) + .
8 2 8
(c) Use the identity in the previous part to evaluate an exact value for cos4 π8 .
4. (5 marks) You’ve decided to bake tarts, bread, and cookies to finish the ingredients you have
around the house. The recipes claim that:
• Each tart requires one (unit of) egg, one unit of sugar, and one unit of flour.
• Each bread requires two (units of) eggs, three units of sugar, and one unit of flour.
• Each cookie requires two (units of) eggs, two units of sugar, and three units of flour.
F17XF - 2023/24 Due date: 3rd May, 2024
In your pantry you have a total of 17 units of eggs, 19 units of sugar, and 20 units of flour
available and you need to finish them all before you go on vacation.
(a) Write down a system of equations for the number of (units of) tarts (t), bread (b), and
cookies (c) that expreses the fact that all ingredients are completely used.
(b) Create an augmented matrix based on the system of equations you produced in (a).
(c) Apply elementary row operations to simplify the augmented matrix to an upper triangular
form where you can apply back-substitution. Be sure to specify the operations you applied
at each step.
(d) Apply back-substitution to find the number of units of tarts, bread, and cookie created to
fully utilise all ingredients.
