2.1 1. Electric Charge

1) What is electric Charge?

2) Where the electric charge is coming from?
3) Types of charges
4) Properties of electric Charges
CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

1. What is electric Charge?

Electric charge is the property of matter due to which it can experience &
produce electric and magnetic Effect.

2. Where the charge is coming from?

CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

3. Type of Charges

Two Type of charges

CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

4. Properties of electric Field

● Charge is a Scalar Quantity

● Charge is transferable
● Charge is always associated with mass.
● Charge produces electric field and magnetic field.
● Like charges repel unlike, charges attract each other
● Charge is conserved: Charge can neither be created nor be
destroyed.
● Quantization of charge.
● The smallest charge that can be added to or removed from a
body is the charge of an electron (e).
● If charge on a body is Q,then
Q = neWhere
n = integer
e = 1.6 x 10-19 C

1) What is electric Field

2) Properties of electric Field
3) Electric Field Intensity
4) Relation Between Force and Field intensity
5) Charge Distribution
6) Type of Different Charge Distribution
7) Electric Dipole
CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

1. What is Electric Field

Electric Field is a region around a charged particle or object within

which a force would be exerted on other charged particles or
objects.
CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

2. Properties of Electric Field

Every point in electric field is special wrt points outside the field.

Every point in field with be defined by 2 properties.

CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

3. Electric Field Intensity

The amount of force experienced by a unit charged particle when it

is placed in the electric field is known as Electric field intensity.

E= F/q

4. Relation Between Force and Field intensity

CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

5. Charge Distribution

Charge Distribution

Discrete Continuous
distribution distribution
CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

5. Charge Distribution

1. Line charge distribution

2. Surface charge distribution

3. Surface charge distribution

CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

6. Type of Different Charge Distribution

● Point Charge

● Line charge

● Ring Charge

● Sheet Charge

● Spherical Shell Charge

● Solid Spherical Charge

7. Dipole
System of two equal and opposite charges separated by a small
fixed distance is called a dipole.

3. Flux

1. Why electric Fields lines are required?

2. Electric Field Lines
3. Electric Flux
4. Electric Flux From Closed Bodies
5. Gauss’ Law
CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

1. Why electric Fields lines are required?

To represent the Region in which charge has its effect.

2. Properties of Electric Field Lines

● The number of field lines originating/terminating on a charge is

proportional to the magnitude of the charge.
CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

● Tangent to a Field line at any point gives the direction of electric

field at that point. This will be instantaneous path charge will
take if kept there.

● Two or more field lines can never intersect each other. [Net
electric field cannot have multiple directions].
CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

● Uniform field lines are straight, parallel & uniformly placed

● Field lines cannot form a loop.

CLASS 12 - PHYSICS- ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS

3. Electric Flux

Electric flux is measure of the field lines crossing a surface.

Charges -q and +q located at A and B, respectively constitute

an electric dipole. Distance AB = 2a, O is the midpoint of the
dipole and OP is perpendicular to AB. A charge Q is placed at P
where OP = y and y>>2a. The charge Q experiences an
electrostatic force F. If Q is now moved along the equatorial
line to p’ such that op=(y/3), the force on Q will be close to:
(y/3>>2a)
