Unit 2
Game
Play in teams. The teacher gives each team a story starter and a list of ten verbs, adjectives and
adverbs. Each student uses one of the verbs (in the past simple or past continuous tense), adjectives
or adverbs to continue the story by creating a new sentence. Students have a minute each to form
their sentence and cannot use a word from the list that has already been used. Students continue to
make sentences until all of the words are used. Each grammatically correct sentence is worth one
point. If a student makes a mistake or cannot continue, one point is deducted and the student loses
a turn. The team with the most points wins.

Sample story starters:

I was walking to school … It was a cold winter night …

I was lying on the beach and enjoying the sun… Jenny was home watching TV …

Sample verbs, adjectives & adverbs:

hear surprised luckily

trip scared suddenly
ring shocked loudly
call bored happily
scream excited carefully
rain unable thankfully
cry tired slowly
look happy fortunately
realise confused quickly
decide nice badly

► Teacher: I was walking to school …

Team A S1: and I was very happy because it was my birthday that day.
Team A S2: As I was walking, I heard someone crying loudly.
