Welcome to the A2+ level writing pack! This pack is designed to help you strengthen your writing
skills by focusing on two key types of paragraphs: opinion paragraphs and cause/effect paragraphs.
Through engaging exercises and practical examples, you will learn how to clearly express your
opinions and analyze the reasons behind various situations. These skills are essential as they lay the
groundwork for the essay writing tasks you will encounter at the B1 level. By mastering these
paragraph types, you will be well-prepared to advance to more complex writing assignments in your
future studies.
At Department of Basic English, we use a process-oriented approach in our writing lessons. Process
writing has different stages of writing (planning, drafting, editing and re-writing).
1. PLANNING
a. Brainstorming
Before you write a paragraph, you should think of as many ideas as possible about the topic and this
stage is called brainstorming. It will help you put your thoughts together, and then you will organize
them in the outlining stage. There are many ways of brainstorming such as listing, clustering and free
writing.
Listing: With the listing technique, you think about your topic and quickly make a list of all the words
and phrases that come to your mind.
Then you can separate these words in different categories (weather, activities, entertainment, etc.)
and use them as your supporting ideas.
Clustering: In this technique, you write the topic in the middle of your page. Using arrows or lines,
you draw many circles around the central idea, find related words and phrases and create a network
of ideas.
Free Writing: You just grab the pen and write whatever comes to your mind about your topic. You
don’t have to worry about your grammar or the format of your writing. You continue to think and
write what your topic reminds you of. After you finish, you go over your writing to pick any ideas that
can help you with your planning.
Example:
Antalya is the best place. I went there a year ago. It was May. It was a rainy day, but then the
sun came out. The sea, the mountains… They looked fantastic. Antalya Archaeology Museum was
excellent. I spent 3 hours there. There were hundreds of tourists in the museum. The food at the hotel
was delicious. We walked along the parks and the beaches. We took pictures. It is a peaceful city. It is
also close to other holiday resorts in the Mediterranean Region. It has an airport. It has beautiful
hotels. There are many activities to do. You never get bored. You can do these activities or simply lie
down on the beach and relax. We went to some beach parties as well. I met new friends from
Germany and South Korea. I spoke English. It was fun!
Remember! In the brainstorming step, you can write as many ideas as possible,
but you don’t have to use all of these ideas in your writing.
b. Outlining
After creating ideas related to your topic, you need to organize all of these ideas before starting to
write. Preparing an outline helps you organize your notes. You don’t have to write full sentences in
your outline.
Here is a sample outline for the topic “Antalya is the best place to go on holiday.”
OUTLINE
TOPIC SENTENCE: Antalya is the best place for a holiday in my country for three reasons
Supporting Detail: warm all year round and hot for many months
Further Detail: spending time on the beaches and swimming in the sea for a long time
SUPPORTING IDEA 2: Secondly, there are many fun things to do during the day in Antalya.
SUPPORTING IDEA 3: Lastly, Antalya has lots of options for fun at night
Supporting Detail: many bars, pubs, and clubs in the city center and on the beaches
CONCLUDING SENTENCE: In conclusion, with its great weather and lots of activities, Antalya is the
perfect place for a holiday in my country.
PARAGRAPH ORGANIZATION
3. Paragraphs also have a concluding / conclusion sentence, which states the main idea, again using
different words. Concluding sentences are not always necessary.
An opinion is a statement of someone’s belief. When
you say, “I believe . . .” or “I think . . .”, you are
expressing an opinion. In writing classes, you often
have to express and support your opinions. Here are
four keys to write a successful opinion paragraph:
State your opinion clearly in the topic sentence.
Present the ideas for your opinion in logical
order.
Use supporting details (justifications) to support
each idea.
End with a powerful concluding sentence that
your reader will remember.
Example:
Exercise 1: With a partner, read the following paragraph. Circle the topic sentence and underline
the three supporting ideas.
Studying a Foreign Language
I think that all students should study a foreign language. First, knowing another language can
help you in your life and job. You have a better chance of getting a good job if you speak more than
one language. Also, your life can be more interesting when you talk to people from other countries,
read their books, watch their movies, and sing their songs. Second, learning a foreign language helps
you understand the world better. You learn how people in other countries think and live. For
example, you might find that people celebrate holidays or eat meals in different ways. This can help
you be more open-minded and accept other people. Finally, learning a foreign language helps you
learn more about yourself. It makes your brain work better, improves your memory, and gives you
more confidence. As you try to speak in a new language, you learn to be more patient and never give
up. For all these reasons, I believe that learning a foreign language is a fun and rewarding way to
understand and enjoy the world more. (179 words)
