Maintaining Healthy Body Systems


Advances in medical technology and modern public health strategies have come a long way in
identifying, diagnosing, preventing and treating human diseases and conditions from early
childhood through adulthood. This project will allow you to study a common disease or illness.

Your Task:
1. Select one of the following diseases/illnesses:

● Influenza ● Rubella ● Hyperthyroidism


● Hepatitis B ● Polio ● Hypothyroidism
● AIDS ● Tuberculosis ● Crohn's disease
● SARS ● Diphtheria ● Gastroesophageal
● West Nile Virus ● Cystic Fibrosis reflux disorder
● Cancer ● Mad Cow Disease (GERD)
● Measles ● Tay-Sachs disease ● Coronary artery
● Chickenpox ● Lupus disease
● Mumps ● ALS ● Lead poisoning

2. Design an informative pamphlet about your disorder. It should include the following:

What is the exact cause of the disease (i.e. bacteria, virus, mutations) and how
does it occur/is contracted?

Describe the effect of the disease in/on the specific cells and the
organs/organ systems of the body.

How is the disease detected/screened? What technologies or Public health


strategies have been developed to help diagnose/contain the disease/illness?

What is the prevalence (frequency in Canada? In the world?) of the disease?

Is there any treatment for the disease (medications, therapies, special diets,
etc.)? If so, what is involved in the treatment?

Be sure to include diagrams and graphs (at least 3 distinct, and relevant diagrams and/or
graphs) to support your research. You must include a bibliography in APA format on the
backside of your pamphlet.

3. You and your group members (maximum group of 3) will be responsible to present a 3-7
minute summary of your disorder to the class on the day the assignment is due. This
presentation should highlight the main findings of your research.

Dates: Your pamphlet is due ___________________, and the presentations will happen in
class the same day (i.e. first day of presentations). On _________________ your group
will have a work period(s) to put your pamphlet together and to practice for your
presentation. Be sure to bring all your supplies and research on that day.
