would bet $1,000 that those male

■/1994 is to be Dustin Rhodes’

/ ultimate breakthrough year, then

there’s no doubt that 1993 was the
year Rhodes crashed through the
barrier. A long feud with Rick Rude
ended with Rhodes on top and with the
U.S. title wrapped around his waist. He
battled Vader for the World heavy
weight title and rose to the upper
echelon of the rankings. Although
Rhodes eventually lost the U.S. title to
Steve Austin at Starrcade ’93, the loss
was controversial and came only after
Austin held Rhodes’ trunks for the pin
in the second fall. Undaunted, Rhodes
trudged on. He challenged Lord Steven
Regal for the World TV title and, at
press time, was on the verge of an
important series of matches for the belt.
“The Natural” is rising fast. He is
already a major player in WCW, and
during the coming months he might
become the player. The World title is in
his sights, and don’t be surprised if
Rhodes is the king of WCW by the end
of the year. Although Rhodes obviously
has a busy schedule, he found time to
sit down with Senior Writer Dave
Rosenbaum and answer these “10
Questions. ”

W tSSsbefore the celebrating was over, wrestlers around the
world were getting ready to take on Flai,r knowing that to
be the man, they’d have to beat the man.
The man is ready. WCW World champion Ric Flai,r his
career still chugging along, wants to take on all comers and
make his 11th World title reign even better than the other
10.

But there are plenty of wrestlers out there who want to

make this reign the shortest. Here are five men who have
targeted Flair and have the ability to get the job done.

VADER
The most natural rival. Flair beat the big man for the
title, and now the big man wants the title back.

Vader is following the pattern set by

(less than a week, in both cases);
Flair turned the trick five times.
“That’s what makes a great

Sting and Flair have vrrestled many
times in the past. Both agree that
because they're on cordial terms
today, there's no reason they can t
still compete against each other.

STING
Although Sting and Flair are
friends, there’s nothing in the
WCW rules prohibiting them
from wrestling each other. And
there’s nothing in their feelings
for each other preventing it,
either. \
“Wrestle Rfc? Why not?”
Sting said. ●
When Sting and Flair
teamed at Qash of the Cham
pions XXIV for a quick and
decisive victory over The Co
lossal Kongs last August, Flair
said: “We’ll be friends at the
Clash, but after that it’s every
man for himself.”
And it was, as Flair and
Sting battled just days after the
Qash op WCW Sdturday Night.
The match went on for 40
remarkable minutes before
Flair won by countout.
“Respect means knowing
what a person has dope ahd
what they’re capable of doing.
I have great respect for Sting,” Flair said. “Friendship means knowing
you can overcome anything. Since when can’t two friends compete
against each other?
“I want that belt. Ric knows that,” Sting added. “I have no desire to
be second-best.”

May 1994 ♦ WCW Magazine 37

RICK RUDE
Flair and Rude know/each other well. They feuded recently. Rude,
using a foreign object, woh the International heavyweight
championship from Flair.at Fall Braiwl ’93,. They met again at
Halloween Havoc and Rude retained the/belt after getting disqualified.
Rude made .several advances toward Fifi during their feud, which by
no means ended when Flair defeated Vader.
<(

Now I want him even more;,” Rude said- “I know I can beat him,
and he knows it, too. Not once has he stepped into that ring and pinned
my shoulders to the mat. I’d be very surprised if he could do now what
he couldn’t do before.”
Rude and Flair are natural rivals becaiise their styles are so similar.
Neither man is huge, but both have vast Ldentifib skills and four stai’s
in ring generalship. They are intense competitors with huge egos and
tremendous records of accomplishment.
But Rude has never won the WCW World/heavyweight title, and
he’d like nothing better than to win his first from Flair.
a

Nature Boy” vs. Ravishing One” sounds fine to us!

Flair controls Rick Rude on

the mat during their meet¬
ing at Fall Brawl '93. The
Ravishing One" has much
in common with Flair—
except for the fact that
he's never worn the WCW
World title.

THE GREAT MUTA

Flair and Muta feuded intensely in
1989 and 1990, but met mostly in tag
team matches. A few years have
passed since Flair and Muta last
feuded, but neither has forgotten their
matches in Japan and the U.S.
“Muta’s a tremendous wrestler,”
Flair said. “Fve never seen anyone
combine traditional scientific wrest
ling with martial arts the way he
does.”
Muta’s reverse spinning kicks are
formidable weapons, and his moon-
sault, while not possessing the sheer i
impact of Vader’s, remains one of the
first and best of its kind in the sport.
Muta’s trips to the U.S. have been
infrequent over the past few years,
but he recently told friends that he
would travel anywhere for a match
against Flair. Now that Flair has the
WCW World title, Muta would gladly
fly to the ends of the earth for a shot
at that coveted championship!
If certain negotiations pan out, that
shot may come very soon, indeed! The battles between Flair and Rick Steamboat are classic matches, the stuff of wrestling legend.
More legends may yet be written by the two before 1994 is over!

Out & About” goes behind the

scenes to learn a bit about a man you’ve probably never heard
of—but who has profound effects on every match you see!

Chuck Tache, fhe trainer for World Championship

Wrestling, is responsible for the prevention, care, and i
rehabilitation of any injury sustained by the wrestlers. /
"It's a tough job," Chuck admits, "because wrestling is /
such a tough sport. But I'm dealing daily with some of |
the greatest athletes in the world, and that makes a m

tough job that much more enjoyable and interesting." A

Chuck tapes the ankle of "Mr.

Wonderful" Paul Orndorff. I
graduated Edinboro University in
1989 with a B.S. degree in health
and physical education," he says,
"and got my certification from the
National Athletic Trainers Association
in 1990." That knowledge will be put
to a severe test if Orndorff starts
utilizing his piledriver as a finisher
more often!

2 Cold Scorpio's elbow gets some special attention before a match. "I've been practicing sports medicine on
the high school, college, pro, and Olympic levels," Chuck says, "but working with an athlete like Scorpio, who
utilizes such an aerial attack, presents a whole new world of challenges!"

"Sometimes somebody will

that are kind of non

enough to keep them out of
a match. That's when I
really have to go to work!"

“It’s about time Simmons showed
some guts. He did in the past, once
or twice, and maybe he’s about to
do so again. He’s tough, there’s no
doubt. He played the pain game on
the gridiron, just like me, and he
met with a hell of a success. But in
wrestling, like in football, it’s
attitude that elevates a mediocre
player to a superstar. Now that
Simmons has the right attitude,
maybe he can get something done
for himself around here.
