CHAPTER 7 – SHAPES AND SYMMETRY

Quadrilaterals:
Shape Name Properties
Trapezium • one pair of parallel sides.

Isosceles trapezium • one pair of sides the same length

• one pair of parallel sides
• two pairs of equal angles.

Kite • two pairs of sides the same length

• one pair of equal angles.

Parallelogram • opposite sides are parallel.

• opposite sides are equal
• opposite angles are equal.
Rhombus • all sides the same length.
• two pairs of parallel sides.
• opposite angles are equal

It is a a parallelogram with all sides

equal.
Rectangle • a parallelogram with right angles.

Square • all sides the same length.

• all angles are 900 .

It is a parallelogram with all sides

equal and all angles right angles.

Regular Polygons
HW: Focus questions 1-7 (Page Numbers: 96 & 97)

Practice:
1) Write true(T) or false (F) for each statement about regular polygons.

a) A regular hexagon has five lines of symmetry.

b) A regular octagon has order of rotation 8.
c) A regular pentagon has order of rotation 10.
d) A regular decagon has 10 lines of symmetry.
e) A regular polygon with 15 lines of symmetry has 15 lines.
f) A regular polygon with order of rotation 20 has 19 sides.

2) Match each quadrilateral with its correct properties

Ans : A ___ , B - ____ , C - ____, D - ____

3) Match each quadrilateral with its correct properties

Ans : A ___ , B - ____ , C - ____

Challenge
4) This diagram shows the hierarchy of quadrilaterals.
In the diagram, a quadrilateral below another is a special case of the one above it.
For example, a square is a special rectangle but a rectangle is not a square.
Use the diagram to decide if these statements are true or false.

a. A parallelogram is a special trapezium.

b. A kite is a special rhombus.

c. A trapezium is a special quadrilateral.

d. A rhombus is a special parallelogram.

e. A square is a special rhombus.

f. A rectangle is a special square.

g. A kite is a special quadrilateral.

6) Complete the given table.

7) A hendecagon is a regular polygon with 11 lines of symmetry.

How many sides does it have?

Ans:
8) A dodecagon is a regular polygon with order of rotational symmetry 12.
How many sides does it have?

Ans:

8.2 The circumference of a circle

Circumference of a circle,
C= πd ,where d is the diameter of the circle.
Or C= 2πr (Since d = 2r, r is the radius of the circle.

HW: Focus questions 1-4 (Page Numbers: 102 & 103)

Practice:
1) Work out the circumference of each circle in terms of π.
a) diameter = 16cm

b) diameter = 9.5 m
c) radius = 10 m

d) radius = 2.8 m

2) Work out the radius of a circle with

a) Circumference = 14 π cm

b) Circumference = 40 π cm

c) Circumference = 35 π cm

3) Work out the diameter of a circle with

a) Circumference = 23 π cm
b) Circumference = 40 π cm

c) Circumference = 16.8 π cm

Challenge
4) Work out the perimeter of this semicircle. Round your answers correct
to 2 decimal places (2 d.p.).

8.3 – 3D Shapes
Practice:
E=F+V−2

1) The diagram shows a pentagonal prism.

a) Write the number of faces, vertices and edges for this prism.

F= ____, V = _____, E = ______

b) Substitute the values for F, V (From part a ) into the formula to check your
value for E.

c) Use the formula to workout the number of edges of a shape with 8 faces and
12 edges .

d) Use the formula to work out the number of edges of a shape with 11 faces
and 20 edges .
