NOUN CLAUSES

A. What is a 'noun clause


It is a group of words containing a verb and functioning as a noun. A sentence can
contain one or more clauses.
II. What is the function of a 'noun clause'? Just like a noun, a noun clause is
used to refer to a person, place or thing.
Check the following sentences.
Where does Jane live?
a)I don't know Jane's address. (noun)
a)I don't know where Jane lives. (noun clause)

A.2. FUNCTIONS OF A NOUN CLAUSE

a).Subject of a verb
That smoking causes cancer is a fact.
What the teacher say is not true.
That he is too old is obvious.
What Tom is eating is delicious.
What I need now is a glass of water.
When they will buy a house is a mystery.

b).Object of a verb
I think that she is beautiful.
I don't know when my father will come.
Can you guarentee that she'll pay the money back?
I think that this lesson is boring.
I predict that it will rain tomorrow.

B.What are some noun clause markers?

C.NOUN CLAUSES WITH QUESTION WORDS


They begin with a question word. They are also called Embedded Questions
a)Where does she live?
a) I don’t know where she lives.
b) Which road should I take?
b) I wonder which road I should take.

(Study the following examples:)

v) Who took my book? I don’t know who took your book.
x) Whose: Whose car is this? I don’t know whose this cars is.
y) Which : Which car will you buy? I don’t know which car I will buy.
z) Whichever :You can take whichever you want.

D.NOUN CLAUSES WITH WHETHER AND IF


Yes/no questions can be used as noun clauses. If / Whether are used to begin such
clauses. The subject must come before the verb.You can use if and whether in a noun
clause, and we generally use this kind of grammar to ask or answer yes/no
questions. When asking a question using a noun clause with if, the pattern is do
you know + if + sentence. The sentence part can be a present, past, or future
sentence:
Let's imagine this situation. You sent your friend Mary an invitation for a
birthday party and she hasn't called you or replied your invitation.
She may come or she may not come to your party. When one of your friends asks:
"Will Marry come to the party? We can use Whether/If and answer the question as
follows:
I don't know whether Marry will come to the party.
I don't know if Marry will come to the party.
Look at the similar questions and how we use Whether/If in noun clauses.
A: Did John pass the exam? (I don't know)
A: I don't know if John passed the exam.
A: I don't know Whether John passed the exam.
B: Does this train go to Moscow? (I have no idea)
B: I have no idea if this train goes to Moscow?
B:I don't know whether this train goes to Moscow.
C: Does she need any help? (I wonder)
C: I wonder if she needs any help.
C: I wonder whether she needs any help.

D.1.When answering a yes/no question using a noun clause with if, the pattern is I
don’t know + if + sentence. As in the question, sentence part of the answer can be
a present, past, or future sentence:

I don’t know if this train goes to Boston.


I don’t know if Jack passed his exam.
I don’t know if the next meeting will be in New York.
