The Best Slice of Life Comedy Anime

The slice of life genre will usually present by bringing up stories of life around us, such as
about school children, office workers and even the lives of the surrounding community.
Anime with this genre will usually relax us and don’t make us think hard to understand the
complicated stories as in the mystery or psychological genre. Added with comedy, this genre
will be the perfect story to unwind or just look for entertainment.

Today I’ve picked up the best slice of life comedy anime part 1.

10. Great Teacher Onizuka


One of the old comedy anime but still has its own existence. Great Teacher Onizuka or as
they call it GTO, is an anime adaptation of a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by
Tooru Fujisawa. This series was serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine from
January 1997 to February 2002, with the chapters compiled into twenty-five tankobon
volumes. The story focuses on a 22-year-old former bosozoku member named Eikichi
Onizuka, who one day becomes a high school teacher. The series is a continuation of
Fujisawa’s previous manga series, Shonan Junai Gumi and Bad Company, both of which
focus on Onizuka’s life before becoming a teacher. Then in summer 1999, an anime TV
series was released with 43 episodes in total produced by studio Pierrot. It started when a
former member of the Gang named Eikichi Onizuka, one day wants to become the greatest
teacher in all of Japan. It is done not because he likes teaching, but the point is that he wants a
wife who is still a teenager, while teaching he is looking for his life partner.

9. Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku


Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku or in the Japanese title Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii, is an
anime adaptation of a Japanese web manga series written and illustrated by Fujita. The series
was first posted on the Pixiv website in April 2014. Starting from a web manga, the series
began serialization in Comic Pool, a joint web manga publication project between Ichijinsha
and Pixiv in November 2015. Then in April 2015, Ichijinsha began publishing manga in print
and 9 volumes has been published in the August 2020 issue. To be precise, in spring 2018,
this series received an anime TV series adaptation with 11 episodes in total. The main
character named Narumi Momose, an office worker who always hides her Fujoshi life. Then
there is a man named Hirotaka Nifuji, an office worker who is quite handsome and agile, but
basically, he is an Otaku. Even though they are old friends, their status as Otaku makes an
awkward romance full of comedy.

8. Haganai: I don’t have many friends


Haganai: I don’t have many friends or in the Japanese title Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai,
is an anime adaptation of a Japanese light novel written by Yomi Hirasaka and illustrated by
Buriki. The series has received several manga adaptations, the first incarnation with the title
and basic plot unchanged, written and illustrated by Itachi beginning to be published in
Monthly Comic Alive. The story begins with a transfer boy in St. Chronica’s Academy
named Kodaka Hasegawa. As a transfer student, Kodaka is very difficult to make friends, not
because of his annoying personality, but because his appearance is like a thug with blonde
hair and intimidating eyes. One day he meets a girl named Yozora Mikazuki. Realizing that
they have no social life and skills, they decide that the best way to improve their situation is
to form Neighbors Club. Then other students from different backgrounds join them.
Neighbors Club can be said to be a club for those with no friends, and most of the stories will
revolve around their daily activities inside the club while trying various social activities at
school and outside school, which they think as practice to make friends regardless of friends
outside the club.

7. Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!


Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! or in the Japanese title Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!
is an anime adaptation of the light novel series written by Torako and illustrated by Nozomi
Osaka. This series won an honorable award in the Kyoto Animation Award competition in
2010. Throughout the series, it will tell a group of high school students filled with delusions,
or they usually call it Chunibyo Syndrome. For the TV anime adaptation, it aired in fall 2012
with 12 episodes in total, followed by several sequels afterwards. Starting with Yuta Togashi,
a boy who suffers from Chunibyo Syndrome, where he believes of having supernatural
powers. He calls himself the ‘Dark Flame Master’, because of that, in the past he isolated
himself from his friends. As Yuta grows older, he feels ashamed of his past as Chuunibyo, he
tries to be free from his old delusions when he enters high school. Although it is difficult,
added with his introduction to a girl named Rikka Takanashi, a delusional girl, who reminds
him of his past. As the story progresses, Rikka becomes more attached to Yuta. Even though
he finds Rikka’s delusions very annoying and embarrassing, he still helps Rikka in various
ways.

6. Servant X Service
Servant X Service is an anime adapted from a manga written and illustrated by Karino
Takatsu, then in summer 2013, studio A-1 began adapting this anime with 13 episodes in
total. The story revolves around the daily lives of civil servants in a government office
building in the fictional city of Mitsuba, Hokkaido. Frustrating, always feeling inadequate
and annoying, that’s what others think of civil servants, but with 3 new employees coming in
they don’t know what’s really going on behind the scenes. Starting with Lucy Yamagami,
determined to take revenge against the civil servant who allowed her long and funny name to
be included on her birth certificate. It all started when Lucy’s parents had a hard time finding
her name when she was born, thus giving her various unique names, ultimately approved by
local law. Next for the 2 nd new employee is Yutaka Hasebe, an easygoing man who always
looks for a place to relax. And finally, there is Saya Miyoshi, a female worker who works for
the first time and feels nervous. With problems exist from the start, they begin to doubt their
new job as civil servants, but they end up supporting each other as fellow new employees.

5. Nichijou
Nichijou is a slice of life comedy anime based on a Japanese manga series written and
illustrated by Keiichi Arawi. The manga began serialization in the December 2006 issue of
Kadokawa Shoten’s manga magazine Shonen Ace, and was also serialized in Comptiq
between the March 2007 and July 2008 issues. Set in the Japanese suburban town, Nichijou is
inhabited by a series of characters, depicting moments from their daily lives, seems absurd
and strange, without any focus on the narration. A 26-episode anime adaptation directed by
Tatsuya Ishihara and produced by Kyoto Animation, aired in spring 2011. Although it
doesn’t have a clear plot because it only shows the daily life of each character, the main focus
is on a trio of high school girls, Mio Naganohara, Yuuko Aioi and Mai Minakami, which then
relates to a genius little girl named Hakase Shinonome and her robot caretaker Nano and a
talking cat Sakamoto. Interconnected lives and various absurd craziness are available in this
anime.
4. Working!!
Working!! or commonly called Wagnaria, is an anime adapted from a four-panel manga
series written and illustrated by Karino Takatsu. The story follows the unusual activities of
employees at one of the family restaurant units named Wagnaria. The series was serialized in
Square Enix’s Young Gangan seinen manga magazine between January 2005 and November
2014. An anime television series produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Yoshimasa
Hiraike, aired in three seasons in 2010, 2011, and 2015, respectively. Then, in fall 2016, A-1
Pictures released an anime series entitled WWW.Working!!, but it is set in another branch of
the Wagnaria restaurant and follows different groups and characters from the previous series.

3. K-On!
K-On! is a slice of life comedy anime adapted from a Japanese four-panel manga series
written and illustrated by Kakifly, which began serialization in Houbunsha’s Manga Time
Kirara magazine between its May 2007 and October 2010 issues. Later in April 2009, a 13-
episode television anime series adapted by Kyoto Animation aired, then followed a second
season which aired in September 2010 with 26 episodes in total, as well as several OVAs. Set
in Sakuragaoka High School, there are 4 girls who were at first the members of Light Music
there. Together with Yui Hirasawa the vocalist and guitarist, who initially had no experience
playing guitar and even reading Sheet Music. Then there is bassist Mio Akiyama, she is a
very shy girl. The third is drummer Ritsu Tainaka, a tomboyish girl who started the idea of
making Light Music, she is also the chairman of the club. Lastly, there is keyboardist
Tsumugi Kotobuki, a very innocent rich girl. All of whom spend their daily activities
practicing in order to perform better, although most of their activities are only spent relaxing
and drinking tea in the club room.

2. The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior


The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior or in the Japanese title Bokura
wa Minna Kawai-sou, is an anime adaptation of the manga series by Ruri Miyahara. This
series began to be published in Shonen Gahosha’s seinen manga magazine Young King
OURs since its June 2010 issue. The story begins with a new student at high school named
Kazunari Usa. As a result of his parents’ jobs transfer, Usa is finally able to enjoy life on his
own. He starts living in a boarding house called Kawai Complex, although at first he refused
to live there, in the end he gives up and ends up living there because he sees a girl there, who
turns out to be the senpai at his new school. Kawai Complex has a variety of different
character backgrounds, from a roommate who turns out to be a masochistic man, then there is
a beautiful woman but has bad luck when it comes to men, and finally there is a student who
has a cunning mind. Everyone is basically surrounded by weird people who end up getting
carried away in Kawai Complex.

1. Daily Lives of Highschool Boys


Daily Lives of Highschool Boys or in the Japanese title Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, is a
comedy anime adapted from a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yasunobu
Yamauchi. The manga was serialized in Gangan Online and released in seven manga
volumes between May 21, 2009 and September 27, 2012. Later in January 2012, a twelve-
episode anime series produced by Sunrise premiered. The plot of the story in this anime is
quite simple but the comedy presented is very absurd with the main characters are high
school students. Starting from the daily life of 3 school friends, Tadakuni, Hidenori Tabata
and Yoshitake Tanaka from Sanada North Boys High School, with various absurd
interactions with students and other people.
