Steps:
1. Use subheadings.
2. Give a clear introduction.
3. Explain your objective, methods, timelines, or budget when needed.
4. Conclude by emphasizing the benefits of the proposed idea.
5. Take a clear stand in your proposal and set a positive tone.
6. Avoid language such as: “might”, “could”, “ought”, “may”, “should”,
“hope”, “it appears”.
7. Support the argument with evidence such as statistics and data.
8. Use formal language and be very polite.
9. Avoid exaggerated or emotional expressions.
10. Be: clear, persuasive, and assertive.
11. Proofread.
Structure:
- Introduction: must hook the reader.
- Problem or need: define it.
- Solution: present it, how does it address the problem? Why is it the best
option?
- Potential problems.
- Conclusion: restate your proposal’s benefits and call to action.
Speech
A speech is addressed to a listening audience, speaker wishes to make
an impact, hold the attention and convince them of the idea.
Tips:
- Use a variety of techniques that help make your speech convincing.
- Consider who will be listening to you.
- Consider the angle you will take to best suit that group.
- Be clear about your purpose: is it to persuade, inform, entertain, or
welcome? Which form of address is appropriate for your speech?
Steps/structure:
1. Have a clear introduction: begin by greeting your audience, grabbing their
attention, give one sentence summary of your speech topic and your point of
view. Convince the audience that you have credibility by citing your
qualifications. Briefly outline the key points you are covering. Explain the
benefits, what’s in it for them? Why will they want to hear you?
2. Main body: can be a reasoned argument, it will contain supporting
paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting evidence and explanations.
3. Conclude your speech by re-stating the main arguments using different
words. The final sentence should be a clincher or call to action.
4. Always maintain contact with your audience.
5. Use rhetoric that is suitable to the audience.
